No doubt the cops called the pursuit off just minutes before the fleeing train crashed.

Wouldn't it be far more exciting it the patrol car was on it's roof or even on flames!! <--result of watching far too many movies.

Yeah and then KIT (the one from knight rider not bugjuice) comes bursting through the flames doing a jump . and lands heavily somehow not fucking the suspension, and carries on with his little red flashy light thing at the front that goes whur whur

It's the 'moving block' technique - it was used successfully here to prevent the train from going onto a flood-weakened bridge!!

You know it was a woman cop driving too eh!! It was reported that she saw the train coming behind in her rear view mirror so she tried to back out the way and ran towards the train and obviously got t-boned in the attempt to get back clear of the track.

As mentioned bridge is over Taramakau river just south of Kumara.
