Cheers - tried that but the toaster went all funny when I poured the water in, something went bang and the bread turned to mush instead of toast.

Should I have unplugged it first, and if so - why?

Clearly the water was from the Waitaki river (different colour = higher voltage). The result is letting the smoke out both previusly discussed here.

i took all youre advice and decided to go skinny dipping rather than sleeping but the electricity did not seem to recharge me

instead i came out all covered in sewage and fish hooks with sprats hanging off me does auckland harbour carry no electricity does the pollution stop it from carrying much voltage

"can not be fucked" - hell man, if that is the case then I'm suprised you have enought energy to breathe enough to maintain life - let alone do anything else.
