    A Russian scientist announced...

After digging to depth of 100 metres, russian scientists announced they had found traces of copper wire dating back at least 1000 years and concluded that their ancestors must have already had a telephone network 1000 years ago.

Not to be outdone, american scientists announced they had dug 200 metres and found races of 2000 year old optical fibre, concluding that their ancestors already had high tech fibre telephone networks at least 1000 years before the russians.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, scientists dug to a depth of 500 metre and found absolutely nothing. Therefore they concluded that 5000 years ago, Maori or their ancestors were already using wireless networking technology

    Internet connections from yesteryear

'After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the POMS, in the weeks that followed, Australian scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly after, headlines in the Aussie newspapers read: 'Australian archaeologists have found traces of 150 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the Brits.'

One week later, Maori TV reported the following: 'After digging as deep as 30 meters in his backyard in Te Kuiti, Hone Waiata, a King Country Kaumatua, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Hone has therefore concluded that 300 years ago Maori had already gone wireless.'

To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

Has there ever been a Maori artefact discovered that resmbles a wheel? i think not.
I find it quite difficult to swallow that there was a race that hadnt discovered the wheel only 200 years ago.

Ferk they have surperb "Oratory skills". Look at what they have achieved. A simple treaty of few words and they have obtained so much since.

I just wish they could represent me at each wage review.

Why would they discover the wheel?

This sort of thing is usually discovered when there is a need to be met. But they had a fairly small population in a very fertile land with an abundance of food sources. Any long distance travel needs up and down this relatively long thin country could have been adequately met using a waka. The fairly mild climate would not have prompted the use of stone masonry for construction, so nothing really heavy to transport, besides large mammals like horses or oxen to propel a wheeled cart were also lacking prior to European settlement.

They had however developed other technologies more appropriate to their environment.
