Scumdog, I was being purely hypothetical (sp?) I believe that what this guy did IS assault, I do not believe that he should have done it and I actually think its disgusting. However I was just commenting on what the defts lawyers etc may use in this guys defence. As with everything some people may be impressed with what he did (defending his culture) and others (such as myself) disgusted with what hes done. I'm not a maori. I'm not even a Kiwi. I don't know about the challenges and rituals on Marae etc. (though I am trying to learn).
What I do know though is that in Northern Europe, a common feature of nervousness is the smile. It's why guilty Europeans smile... They are nervous.
I've seen the challenge ceremony on TV, and I'd be scared - I'd probably smile as I am one of the nervous smiley types....
I'd hate to be headbutted (or killed) for showing that the Challenge Ritual worked.
