Get hold of a manual and a bunch of tools and get to know your bike intimately over the break. Chances are somebody with the mechanical knowledge of a clown fish has altered things thinking they'll get more go, ie jets, and made it run like a sick dog.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I will check the carbs today. The oil pump is fine, I originally thought the coils might be faulty but I traced (one of the) problems to the CDI so I changed that out, but still get black plugs... the last owner did some funny things with the powervalves so could be the jets/float level are set wrong.

Just tried to send it to you taco but the file's too big so you're out of luck on that one. I'm gonna get it printed out for easy reference in the garage so I could send you a hard copy in the mail if you like...same for you Paul, just let me know. Keep in mind its 247 pages long so would probably cost around $20 a copy...the english is very good though and (obviously) goes into a lot of detail.
