Wanted to buy... *newbie inside*

Hey guys

I'm new to KB (as most of you will realise) but keen to get into riding and meeting other riders... you know, same sort of stuff you guys already enjoy doing.

Anyway I'm hoping one of you has a cheapish bike you're wanting to sell or been thinking about moving on but haven't gotten around to it yet. Preferrably someone in Christchurch or not far from, and it would have to be under 250cc (for reasons that ought to be obvious... but besides the legal thing I don't want a bike I'm probably just going to bin in the first week ), but a proper bike rather than a scooter. Also unless you can convince me otherwise, I'd rather not go with a dirt bike. At least, not for the first one.

From my name I'm sure you'd be able to figure what brand I'm after... ... but I'm a realist. If it's reasonably priced and something that's going to be a good learner's bike (read: GN125 / GN250 and the like) and the price is right, it won't be a problem. Got to start somewhere! Also if you're feeling like playing teacher I'd sure appreciate a few tips, somewhere to practice.. and a couple of beers afterwards

Mods: If I've mucked up and there really is a section on KB for buying / selling / trading bikes and parts etc, feel free to move this there.

Im in the same situation. But i would really suggest a gn. Sure their cheap but there gutless. I was told this by a dealer as well as many other kb's. I was suggested ( By the Dealer ) an FXR150. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...71/k-80512.htm They look cool and are really reliable. They top out at about 150 but i wouldn't suggest pushing it too far.

yeah i used to be hooked on the fxr, then i saw one in the flesh, gaaawd they are ugly, the tyres look like they were pulled off a mountain bike, the speedos are rarely accurate, the gn250 is probably the best first bike you can get, or any yamaha from the sr* range

Don't overlook a bike you can use off road. There is no quicker and safer way than riding off road to learn about when and how a bike will let go - and what to do about it. In NZ also a very good thing to know how to ride unsealed roads.

But, may be harder to find a bike that has not been abused if it has been off road.

Thanks for the feedback guys Yeah the FXR looks like it'd be a cool bike to have to begin with... only, it's just a touch outside my budget.. I'm a poor bugger at this time of year, can't afford very much. I know I'm not going to get a great bike for the sort of money I've got, but a slightly older GN... or something like a Honda CG125.. would probably do nicely. Not that I'd profess to knowing a great deal about bikes at this stage! That'll hopefully change through vigilant KB forums reading Anyone from Chch gonna look in?

Echo bandit rider, have a look at a street legal dirt bike.
I know it is each to their own but...
Apart from being a lot of fun, they are fast enough, easy to handle, give a great view over cars, will go anywhere (including town) and if you do bin it then they bounce really well.

Ehehe that should be incentive enough to get one to learn on at least! I'm probably likely to drop it at least once. Though having said that I've ridden the odd dirt bike before without too many dramas. Not that I was doing anything particularly challenging!
