Thumbs up When and Where to Lane SPlit??

Hey again, apologies for my ignorance.....I am not very familiar with bike terms.. Can someone explain it to me clearly what exactly is "lane Split" or "split Lanes"....
    1. Where can you legally do it? On the motorway/ residential

    2. What to watch out for when doing it?

    3. Need to have the indicator on?

    4. Is it legal to "filter" through the traffic when the traffic light turns red, so the bikes positioned before all the cages?

To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods
