If you do not have a bike you will not live longer...... it will only feel like it.

Seriously, All the people that have negative things to say about biking have no idea what it is about.

Is there danger? You bet but its is your responcability to keep an eye out for it and be ready to react.
Will you make great mates? Hell yea and they will be mates for life.
Will your girl get over it? Probibly not but if she LOVES you she will understand and support you (tell her to buy her own car)
50k on a footpath? you deserve to loose a leg............
Wet in the rain? No way buy good gear.
We are all going to die someday
Buy a backpac or seat bag for carrying stuff

The lifestyle with a bike is fantastic but you have probibly worked that out already. Dont worry what anyone says about YOUR CHOICE after 20 years they will see it is not just a phase.

Never had that problem as I have always made sure that I've had both for the variety of reasons shown before and I've got too many sprogs to fit on my bike
Wouldn't listen too much to what your mates etc have been saying as it is you that'll be riding the bike. Protect yourself well and enjoy the emmence pleasures that come from what a bike can get you no matter what style of bike and riding you're into.

Hmmmm ....... I seem to recall a chick getting hit and killed by a bus whikle crossing the street. Heard about another guy who drowned in his bathtub. Heard about another guy who got electrocuted while a sailing under power lines.

The point is, you can live your life in fear of everything that could kill you. You'd end up living in a windowless airless box and die anyway. Understand that people do care about you and don't understand your reasons for wanting to ride. If you're doing something stupid ie. riding at 50kmh on the footpath then the likelihood that'll you'll hurt yourself is going to be a lot higher than if you ride on the road taking due care to ride within your limits and the law.

I ride because I enjoy it. It's something I do. I don't do it for my wife, I don't do it because someone told me not to and I'm a rebel. I ride because I enjoy it.

I once sold my car to buy a bike and never regretted it, my brothers & sisters were all into bikes then too. they all grew out of bikes and bought cars but I didnt. Even when my daughter started kindy, I used to take her on the bike. Now I have 2 more kids I have no choice but to own a car as well. I still miss the days of only having a bike.
I think everyone here has said it already, only you can decide what you want. If we all did what everyone else wanted us to do then it would be pretty bloody boring.

    Cool

Sell the car.. buy a good bike, good riding gear and a BRAND new helmet.
Then buy a dungy old runabout car.... to keep the peace

    Ok transporting stuff on bikes.
I have carried on the back of my bike the following items - no not all at once.
    A childs car seat.
    A child's booster seat.
A child's old fashioned woooden high chair.
    A dehumidifier.
    A weedeater.
    A spare front tyre.
3 sleeping bags all on top of each other.
    Groceries every week.
Huge box filled up with stuff on many occassions.
Panier bags filled up, tent, bed roll, bag tied on the back and a tank bag.
A single bed sponge bed roll cover.

If I can't put it on the back of the bike and carry it... only then will I use my car.

So start looking at why you want a bike not at all the negative comments.
I had people tell me, that I would be killed, when I first got my bike.
Well its almost 6 years later (being back on a bike) and I am still alive..
They give up after a while, when you dont go having bins.

Get out there and enjoy the FREEDOM of riding.

I once sold my bikes to get a car due to a family on the way. Great having the car in that respect, but I missed the bike no end. If your having this much doubts sounds like you need a cage and once you can afford it buy a cheap bike. The only time I will consider using the cage is if Im transporting my son. I love bikes, but I love my son way more and there is no way Im putting him at risk by having him on one of my bikes.

Tell them to fuck off. I had a bike as only mode of transport for a few months last winter and had no probs. Just as long as it's reliable. Had the mrs. car for groceries and all that - so if your gonna flick the car, make sure you pick up a chik with a car first.
    Because I can...
