Hey Andy, Otama is a fantastic beach to visit. There are camping grounds, and a store relatively close by in Kuaotunu. You could use it as a base camp for a few nights and go for day trips round the Easteren part of the peninsula. The way to get there is to ride to Kuaotunu and then head up the Black-Jack road which is a 5km unsealed access road to Otama and also to Opito Bay.

Not sure of any adventure biking trails tho.

    Have fun.

Thanks for that. Not sure whether to drag the tent along or look for cabins etc... Still pondering. Sounds like a good campsite tho. Is it pretty quiet?

We went around some of Coro the other day. At the gravel ride, we can bring a map & show you where we went (& where we still have to go, just ran out of time). We tented at Port Jackson, but passed a couple of (busier) campsites along the road. There's DOC campgrounds, the price has gone up, it's now $9 a night pp. The one we stayed at had running water (boil it first) and holes in the ground & I got told there was a kitcheny thing (never bothered checking it out so no idea of what was in it). No shops for about 30-40k, plenty of walking to be done if so inclined.
There's also Kauranga Valley (gravel road). Will bring a "what to do" map along for you. If you've got time, there's the cutsey little train ride (the guy built it himself, it's about 2k long track, saw it on the box earlier this year - the Marcus Lush programme).
You'll have a ball, it's great riding around there - just watch the corners & not the damn views (I'm easily sidetracked).

If you wanted to stay in Coromandel town, the bottom pub is great, really cheap and the locals are pretty friendly!! May pay to book early though. Admirals Arms Hotel. ph 07 866 8272. Bedding and breakfast supplied and if memory serves me it was like $15 pp per night!!! Have a great trip!!

Thanks Kendog. What was the parking for the bikes like there? Is it secure.
And dutchee it would be great if you could bring that stuff along to the ride.

There is plenty of parking, not too secure though, but if you ask Dennis really nicely he may be able to put them around the back or in a shed for you for the night.

Yep, there's a few batches at the Eastern end and a few campers during summer but it's not as well known as the big Coro beaches like Cooks beach or Hot Water so it's a good get-away.

As a foot-note I just went into Kathmandu today to get a 2-person tent and summer weight sleeping bag suitable for tramping. Was pleased to see they were having a 50% off sale and scored a nice tent and bag for $309. What's more the tent fits nicely on my bars and the bag squeakes in behind my pillion seat and No. plate, so I'm all sorted

Pics to follow upon completion of 'Naki trip.
