I don't ride a bike because it's safe, I ride it because it's faster than greased lightning and damn fun to ride.

Yep this is true of me. I have the bike so I can chase out the demons. Some times they take a lot to extract. I have no death wish but I do need to live and get the adrenalin pumping. Ask Mrs Gixxer 4 ever if I should sell da bike. She could well move out the same day. It is the balance I need and with out the risk I do not think I would be doing it. Not PC but I have had enough of the PC shit and for me life is for living to the max for tomorrow might never come. However do not endanger others.

The only point I'm gonna make is that I was doing nothing different to what I've done a thousand or so times before, well within MY limits, shit just happens!

Ahhhhhhh reality! Accidents are a sad reality in riding whether it is our "fault" or another party's.
I speed and will continue to speed and I may fall off,has happened before ironically at 70kms though...I didn't ride to the conditions and have learnt my lesson.
    Stay safe y'all

And this is true. The older I get the more I go to. When Flyin(sp) went down it sent shock waves around here. It changed a few of us for a while. Then ST. It is nice to get messages from ST because it reminds us of the big job it is to rebuild our lives. But I still go out and ride to my ( all be it limited ) limit from time to time cos I have to balance the shit in life. Then back to the grind stone of life. I would not have posted like this a year ago but I see life differently now and we must be the people we are not the person people think we should be. Time for a ride.

Alot of the recent posts in this thread have been a case of "no one's gonna tell me what to do" type comments. Yes people are going to crash, yes people are gonna be hoons. The thing to note is that you CAN post here after you've had an accident if you're still alive - it's real hard to do it if you're dead.

I doubt that anyone here is going to go out to try and kill themselves on their bike. I think that Sniper's original comment says it right. Do what you will, how you want, with whatever gear you want - and post about it here. But he's also saying there is a time and a place. I'd prefer to see more bikers here and out there rather than less.

Just my observation, but most of the crashes reported recently have been people riding within their limits who suffered a bit of bad luck / inattention. I think that sums up the overwhealming majority of bike crashes. Sure there are the ones where someone flies off the road at 60 over the limit or something, but most often it seems to be people just doing their normal thing but something goes wrong that day.

I guess the message is "Be careful out there", especially at the moment cos there are more cars on the open road that aren't used to that kind of driving. And there's more of us out there at the moment - some of whom maybe don't ride all that often

The reason I don't say "slow down" is that
    1) We all know that we won't; and
    2) I don't know what anybody elses statistics are like, but all 3 of my bins have been at less than 50km/h anyway. I reckon city streets are the most dangerous areas to ride hands down.

Anyways. Good luck out there folks. Safe riding.

PS: ducatilover: There'll be pies and beer at my funeral. You can come.

This is good. All of it. It is true that if I ride hard and fast I concentrate to the max. If I have an off day and just cruse behind the traffic it is more likely I will run in to stuff.

..and all we can try and do is minimise the chances of shit happening, within the context of the way we ride! All life is a risk balance equation..despite what the safety nazis would have us believe. It is up to the individual to assess the ultimate risk/enjoyment/danger to others, equation for themselves and factor that into their riding, as indeed, their life.
If it all turns pear shaped, all you can hope for is that youve taken sufficient measures to protect yourself, to your satisfaction.
Speed is rarely a cause in itself - unless you count the fact the vehicle was actually moving! Of the 8 offs Ive had, over 35yrs, - only 2 have been over 50K!

Safe motorcycling is basically about risk assessment and risk management.

Then again the average persons understanding of risk assessment is such that it's not uncommon to meet smokers who worry about terrorism...

Yep, and he binned it. whats your point? Are you using ducatilover as an example of why we should slow down?

Ever notice that the more you learn, the luckier you become?
