Sorry I didnt let anyone know when I was heading off, but the final week of course was very full on and I wasnt home for a couple days. Oh well, I managed to leave earlier than I thought I would.

Auckland to Nelson in 2 days on my RG150! Went for palmy on the first day and stopped the night there, very painful experience - just remember to take as LITTLE as possible in your pack! having alot of weight thru the twisty parts not fun at all end up with dead shoulders and staggering around like a zombie when you get off.

The bike did well, had the sprockets and chain changed before I left, was averaging about 110kph the whole way (sitting on 8000rpm ).

Heaps of bikes on the road this weekend, 90% of them all managed atleast a nod or a wave so that was great! Got a @^% of a fright when I was passed by a Mille near Bulls - but oh, what sweet sweet music she was making

I dont know if it was just me, but the little RG seems quiet knackered as I hit Nelson, engine felt like it was spinning and not pulling over 120kph, and then pulling away from the lights she stuttered a bit when it hit about 8000 and shot back down to around 6000 :O But anyway, it was an awesome trip an I cant wait to do it again sometime this year - but on a 600.

Small hint though - never carry anything on your back. It has great potential to kill you if you fall off. As you found out it also knackers you after a while. Strap it to the back seat. You can also get good motorcycle luggage for reasonable money these days. $100 for Oxford's entry level panniers.

Get yourself a Givi top box, fill it with about 20kg of bricks, then wheelie your life away! Just like I used to on me dad's XJ900...........sorry dad.

I have a Ventura pack rack which I strap a day pack onto when I need to carry stuff, it has compression straps which I hook around the rack. I used to use ropes or a cargo net but my bag kept falling off (!)

Yep your power valves are stuffed... they dont like sitting at consistant high revs (I sat at 10000rpm for 100kms, had to stop coz i went through a whole tank of gas:disapint: )

Agree entirely. Get a tank bag or Ventura Rack.

If you are going to carry a back pack make sure it is a bloody close fit with chest and hip straps (less likely to kill/maim you if you come off) and less likely to catch the wind.

My first big bike trip was on the GSXR250. Had straped my old 80L backpack (with the tent and bed roll on the outside) to it (never moved as well tied down for forward/backward & side to side movement). Still was able to pull 160KPH. Went from Whangarei to Hast, accross to Dunedin, and back to Whangarei. Total 3000+Km. Averaged 450Km per day. Got stop by a cop doing 124KPH. He asked what was my hurry. Told him I was cruising Give me a warning and sent me on my way Learn heaps about my bike. Meet heaps of follow bikers and have been hooked on bikes and touring ever since

That's one of the things I love about bikes and bikers, you can spot each other easier and then it's like your one big family , Touch wood of course

Thanks for the advice guys! never really thought about falling off with a pack though, so ill be looking into a pack rack me thinks :O
