Xmas Trip & Jeff's first bin

Took the two Bros's away at Xmas. Went to the Boxing Day races at Wanganui and then onto Taupo for the racing there. Camped at the track. The racing finished early due to the heavy rain. We left Taupo and headed for Napier. Rode in heavy rain until we reached the "5k to Napier" sign. The rain went through my jacket and into my boots so I was feeling a bit sour so we stayed in a motel that night and then came down through the Wairarapa to home for a few days.

We crossed over on the 6am ferry on the 2nd (that was the day of the gale force winds). When we arrived in Picton we went via the Queen Charlotte Drive. It was really wet and twisty through the first part and I don't think I would go that way again when it was really wet. We were just on the hill coming into Havelock when Jeff obviously decided he hadn't had enough sleep and nodded off on the job. I heard a loud bang when the bike went down behind me and couldn't quite believe he had dropped it. Went round the corner and a bloke pulled up and said "your mate is in the ditch back there". He was lucky where he went into the ditch at the side of the road, a couple of feet away it was a 6ft drop. The bit that holds the dials was broken, handlebar turned round, tank dented on both sides and the plastic seat cowling broken and a really muddy bike. However, Jeff was okay except for a few bruises - bit pissed off though! This is Jeff's first bin in 35+ years of riding!! Just as well it wasn't one of his Nortons or I might have had to have him tranquilised! Few roadside repairs and we made it to the local garage in Havelock and got the bike cleaned up a bit. His was the bike on the ferry with bits of string holding it together.

Finally made it to the Nelson street races during the lunch break. Really hot weather and good racing. Saw lots of bikes we hadn't seen before. Spent the night at the motorcamp at Nelson and then went onto Westport the next day. We had hoped to go to Greymouth but they were in the midst of torrential rain. Not long after we left Nelson we hit heavy rain and arrived in Murchison feeling wet and cold. The Buller Gorge was pretty spectacular even in the pouring rain.

When we left Westport we were dry until just before Reefton and then struck more heavy rain until we got to Maruia Springs. We stopped at Springs Junction for gas (what a wet miserable hole!). After Maruia Springs we came into sunshine for the rest of the Lewis Pass. We stopped at a really nice little pub at Rotherham (do a really good all day brekky) then continued to Kaikoura where we hit more rain. All the motels were chokka but we managed to get a motel at a place called Ward 90k north. Ward consists of a gas station, motel and small bar/tearooms that's it!

Went onto Blenheim and Picton yesterday and had a good crossing back over on the ferry, really calm.

We have had rain, rain and more rain these holidays and the tent didn't get a whole lot of use. We have done just over 2000k these holidays. Think we will stick close to home and take the Nortons out now - until we go up to Pukekohe in early February.

So there you go Hitcher. You were not the only one getting up close and personal with the ground this Xmas. I might have to get Jeff a serious off road bike if he wants to go via the drain again!

And if it rains enough, the river floods at least where the road goes underneath a rock over hang
Safe to cross, just need to ensure air in take is high enough as the road dips. Some haven't made it across ...

When were you two riding around that area?
I was out and about waving to the odd biker here and there.
Haven't seen so many bikes on the coast ever.
As I got closer to Chch, encountered many had children as pillions and each child was kitted up nicely, very nicely, head to toe. Some were so colour co-ordinated, if they didn't move trying to see what's up front, they just blended in with the riders themselves.
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.

Xmas Trip & Jeff's first bin

We went down on the 2nd and came back on the 5th.

When we went through the rock overhang water was pouring off the bank above. Fulton Hogan were out in force just before there where a big tree had come down.

Hopefully next time we come down we will get better weather. Next time we will go straight down to Christchurch and across Arthur's pass and come back up the other side to see the towns we missed out on this time.

We didn't see too many bikers. My bike is pretty visible as I have two little driving lights mounted on the front which I use during the day. The LTSA doesn't like them though and I have to take them off for the WOF. Can't be missed at night though! Most people were very friendly where we stopped in places like Murchison (all wet and cold like us!).

well aint that typical...we were at both wanga and nelson st races, but ya didn't come up and say hellooooo....I was the one with a black Tshirt that says RASHIKA on the back (just so you dont miss out on my awesome company next time)
    ah well next time.
We were even on the road heading back to chch on the 3rd...say a few bikes parked up at murch....what bikes were you two riding?

bummer about the ding by the way....pretty good record for 35 years riding!!
That Q charlotte drive is a humdinger, but at least i got to do it in the dry, bugger doing it in the rain.

We were in Taupo for the races on the 28th. Sure pissed down didn't it, Glad I was in the cage. We went on down to Wellington on the 29th, and did the Ferry crossing on the 30th - beautiful. Back in Wellington the same day and stayed there till 4th, when we drove up to Napier via those famous Rimutakas (first time), then back to Auck the next day.

Fickle NZ weather - The only rain we had was on that 28th, and just a little on that very windy Jan 2 when we decided to visit Te Papa!!

Sorry to hear about the bin, Hope alls fixed and good as new soon!

    Hi MrMelon

Yes, that was us on the ferry with you. Hope you had a good trip too. The ferry crossing was very calm coming back compared to the the crossing down there in gale force winds. One of us spent most of the time chucking and it wasn't dirt boy (Jeff)!

    Good to hear from you!

    Hi Leong

Sounds like you had the right idea being in the cage.

How did you like the Takas. It's the favourite riding spot for the local bikers. Usually a collection of bikes at the top of the hill on a good day. No doubt we will be going over the Takas tomorrow for a bit of a blat around the Wairarapa.

Jeff is fine now apart from a swollen hand and we have ordered some bits for the bike so we should be back up and running soon. He has five other bikes to ride in the meantime (two Nortons, a Suzuki 500DR, a GSX 1100 and a 400 Honda GB TT. The Honda Bros is his going away bike. Some of us only have one bike (me)!

I'd heard about the road here and since the only part of the country we'd not been to before was the Wairarapa, we thought we'd go home that way. Our route to and from Taupo was also courtesy of KB, (Poihipi Rd) as posted here in the trip to track day thread - another good road.

The Takas looks like a fun road, think I'd prefer riding south on it as the surface seemed smoother on the northern side, (bit of a nana, prefer blatting uphill) Bit rough going up the way we did, even in the cage, and there were some parts where if you went wide around a corner there looked to be a big drop! Bit scary if you don't know the road.

Ride Safe tomorrow, and look out for those white blue and orange cars - picked up my first ticket in 22yrs on SH50!

PS. Saw the advert re free motorcycle collection at the cafe at the top of the hill - not sure what to make of it - ( Looking at this site you'd think crashes only happened around Auckland )

    Hi Leong

You can't be too much of a nana, you got a ticket didn't you, or was it for going to slow or something!

Jeff likes to scrape his boots going uphill, but I just tootle along at my own pace and he waits at the top. It's not the best on a really windy day up there, you can come round the corner and be hit full on with the wind. If it's too windy I wait at the bottom by the cafe while Jeff does a blat up the hill.
