I just insured my FXR with IAG thru ASB and my excess is $300, entire full cover policy cost annual $158 for $2k policy.... i'm still on my learners too, but over 25 may effect premium a bit...

I also have my insurance with swann( kiwi bike from new plymouth is what they call them selves in NZ) and have been happy with their great service.

Think it cost me $197 odd for 3rd party on my KR 150 when on learners($3000value) and i now pay $365 for full insurance on my Zxr250($5000 value) on restricted. not bad, think excess is over a grand tho. Im under 25

i'm 20 and with AMI, initially i only had 3rd party and it was costing me $25(ish) for my old vt250 for a year, i got the ninja, and decided to go full cover, mainly for the theft cover, and it's now costing around $250, i'm on my restricted, but i don't think they diferentiate between L and R as my premium never went down when i told them i'd got my restricted

Well, I talked to IAG through ASB today. I was quoted nearly $800 for a years full cover. That is taking the piss.

I have no idea how they arrived at this figure. I'm well over 25, driving for 15+ years, I've never been disqualified, clean credit rating and all that good stuff.

As don't know what bike i'm going to have in the near future, the only information they had to go on was the engine size that I was specifically asking them about (250cc), and my age. They didn't know whether I was on my learners, how long I'd been riding, or anything like that.

Just for giggles, I asked them about some larger size bikes, and was quoted roughly the same as for a 250 (about 30 dollars more p/a for a 400cc bike).

The only thing they did ask me was if I had had bike insurance at any time in the last two years, which I haven't. Anyone who works in this industry want to comment on whether this affects the premium?

If the premiums are this high when you first start insuring your bike, that isn't exactly an incentive.

$320 a year for full insurance to value $4000. Excess $1000. Reduces to $500 excess with full license. Over 25 years.

Got it through Kiwibiker (Agent for Swann). They will also honour your no claims bonus from other insurers.

I'm with State (mostly because I'm too lazy to look elsewhere) and I am paying $300 pa for "full" cover for my FXR valued on the policy at $2500. I don't know what the excess is offhand. I got this when I first got my learners. (I'm way over 25 yo.)

I also just got a quote from them for a $12000 SV650S which I might buy when I get my full licence... $1372 pa with excess of $1500. I would at least get a 40% no claims discount once I've had insurance for 1 year. I'll be shopping around....

By the looks of the posts being made the difference in premiums could be the location of the person who has taken the insurance. Look over the past posts and compare it with the location. I could be wrong.

I'm on a learners and am with State.

Full cover, $330 per year with $500 total excess. Rang them up and asked if they would cover me without an L-Plate - They said they would, even after me asking them to double check. I also have contents with them. Their third party is about $80 or something but same excess, so may as well get full cover. They were better than www.kiwibike.co.nz (who are brokers for protecta and Swann I believe, and actually provided a better price than protector) and any other insurance company I rang (which was all of them except National Auto Club).

They are a broker and deal with Swann, protecta and someone else.
Give them a call, had great service.
Had the old 250 (insured for $4k) on my learners through them with Swann. About $400 per year.
Double that for the Trumpy, through swann as well. Not bad for under 25 and a brand new bike.

I'm thinking this may be the case, also the storage location, it seemed to make a difference that my bike is stored in a locked garage that is alarmed...

I think the insurance companies think that you are more experienced and responsible when your over 25.... just a guess...not personal opinion...
