    Route to Taupo

I'm heading to Taupo for the day tomorrow - the bike looks unfit & needs a good run.
Any suggestion for a more interesting route than the normal.

Whats Normal? I used to go down 27 and 1, but did this route on the way back last Wednesday ( Maps posted by MacD ).... far more interesting than the above

I went to welly last week and completely bypassed it but I would get a small map and take the 'not so main roads'

I'f your looking for a good-o ride I would go down sh1 till Ngarawahia where you hang a left and follow to pirongia hang a right to Te-awamutu then KihiKihi follow that road till a road that leads right going to mangakino. the places and road names arnt on my map but its a sexyxxx road with rivers lakes mountains forest and awesome windies. make sure you fill up before you take the road though I came 5-10k to running out till I found this garage with a single pump in wxxxxxxx south (forget the name) dont go into mangakino though. its a hole, no petrol stations on the main road although there is one in the middle somewhere if you neeeed it.

then continue on and go through whakamaru and left towars mokai but go right before then and that leads pretty much straight to taupo

if your lazy then follow sh1 all the way down.

edit: which is damn similar to the one posted above. sorry.

Pyrocam's suggestion is a great ride. As he says turn left at Kihikihi and right into Owairaka Valley Rd (you'll see what used to be an old stone store on your left just before you turn) and follow that to mangakino and Whakamaru. About 10 minutes into Owairaka Valley rd you come to a small settlement called Wharepapa South (right on a corner- you do a hard left here), stop at the cafe for a rest. Good coffee and popular with bikes. There is a service station just past the mangakino township but don't rely on him being open on a sunday. There is another one at Whakamaru that is usually open (cafe there's not bad either!) From here I normally turn right up the western access rd and then left into poihipi rd which takes you straight to Taupo. Watch the Western Access and Poihipi close to Taupo there HP's trolling there today (NEVER seen them on Poihipi before)
Depending on the weather, I was thinking of riding thru to the cafe at Wharepapa South for brunch and then same way home. If you are interested I could ride back to Taupo with you. (Just remember I'm old and slow) If interested PM me to work out a meet time.

Go down sh22 then down to Whatawhata. Find your way to the south west part of Cambridge and take the road to Lake Karapiro events centre and go straight past it. You just follow your nose all the way down the western side of the Waikato river, heading for Arapuni and then Whakamaru. Turn right at Whakamaru and 20k down the road is a sign pointing you to Taupo. It's a good ride. Was thinking of doing it but will probably be going over to Coromandel instead.

Great to meet you both. Trev, anytime you're down this way and want to ride let me know I'll follow you again (no doubt at a distance again!!).
