Nice Cage Drivers?

Like a lot I have been here doing my share of slagging off those that prefer a four wheel purchase on mother earth.
I ride to work (140K round trip) 5 days a week on my old GSX400. This gives me a lot of exposure to what the roads around Auckland have to offer and it is very easy to dwell on the negative and vent frustrations, thumping my keyboard here, about poor drivers (and Rozzers). Maybe it was the weather or whatever but yesterday I couldn't help but notice that there are some courteous Cage pilots out there who will shift to let you pass, allow you some space and generally are are aware that us bike riders are out there A lady even gave me a cheerful wave. So whats the ratio? Are the dicks outnunbering the good guys or are they just a very visible minority that draws the wrath of these forums?

Yep,there are more good drivers out there than get credit here.Last night on my trip home I see a bike behind cutting traffic,he passes me and as we come to ''the squeeze'' going down Takanini hill a courier van pulls right over left with his left wheels over the white line off the road to give the bike room to get past - the bike gave him a thank you wave.

Cage drivers are much like the rest of the population- some good, some bad. I'd like to think that as I ride a bike and drive a cage-tis impossible to get a drum kit on the bike-I'm one of the good ones!

Yeah there is a fair share of both I reckon. I think we only tend to remember the bad experiences with cages though.

i think we just notice the idiots alot more, but i agree there are aloy of cars, when they see you come up behind ya, move to the left, it is very nice feeling

I see far more people shift left to let me past than the wankers that move right to block. (Not that it ever works)
I only wish they'd keep left in a lane all the time so I can stay legal.

proba cos that one shit one is likely to kill ya...thats what would stick in my mind.
But I found that the drivers up north (wgtn to wanga and back) were pretty damn good at letting M/Cs past... they seem to be much worse down south, buggered if i know why?

Had an awesome cruise yesterday up 16, then across Woodcocks, over to Snells beach.Came back down State1 thru rush hour traffic over the bridge,thru town to get on Nth western. Not one Ar*e hole did I meet.
People were pulling over to let me slide thru long traffic lines on the open road. Even Audis and bmw drivers (Norm the worst in my exp.) were letting me go first for o/taking lanes.
Big cues for lights, a courier saw me splitting to the front, he pulled out of line to let me thru.
They are all good days, some are just a lot better than others.

I usually end up in the traffic when I leave for home, so will end up splitting from the Mt. Wgtn offramp (heading Sth) to almost East Tamaki Rd. Probably about 75% of the cars move to give me room, they get a wave and a smile. Had the odd one move to block me, but I've never really had a problem - but then again I do ride a bike with street cred.

it's all too easy to forget the good and rant on the bad.
I've had plenty of nice cagers give me room etc on the road. Last weekend going to and coming back from Manfield on the bike, I had heaps of people move across for me. Every single one got a 'thanks' wave.

Unfortunately, it's the bad ones who nearly kill us or someone else, that we get frustrated against.

Don't forget, a lot of bikers have cages too, so one of those drivers who lets you pass, could be wishing s/he was right there next to you

9 out of 10 drivers are decent I've found. One thing when they pull left in a rural enviroment is that you get covered in stones! Not their fault though...at least they mean well and they wouldn't understand anyway unless they'd been riding.

I think you get some days where the drivers are pretty much all considerate and some when they all seem to have a loathing of motorcyclists!

I always wave if they do move over or are courteous in any other way, but many riders do not. When I'm in the car, it really annoys me if I pull over to let a rider pass safely and don't even get a nod of the head. We were travelling to the Cemetery Circuit one year by car (with all my camera equipment) and several members of our own bike club came up behind us. They rarely see us in the car so didn't know who we were. My husband immediately pulled well over to the left to let them pass - which they all did - and to our shame, NOT A SINGLE ONE bothered to acknowledge it! We certainly gave them a rev up when we saw them!

There's the trick. If you have a good car/van/4 wheel contraption that helps you out, acknowledge it.

You thank them, they feel good, good impression of us, and more likely to do it again. Hell, coming back from Hamilton one day with crashe, nak1d and another I think, a car just about went off the road swerving to the side for us No need to go that far obviously...

Recently, on a ride by myself, I had a van move over coming into clevedon, I waved, he flashed his lights back, nice. Then on Twilight Rd, a car stopped in a gravel driveway to let me pass, again, a wave as a thank you. Plenty of nice cars if you are nice to them.

As bugjuice says,a lot of car drivers ride bikes and are looking out for you - these days I do 100:1 the mileage in a car than bike,you are more likely to see me in a 4X4 than on a bike.You can tar me with the 4X4 brush if you like - but I'll run interferance on the road for you anytime....
