Afaik, it should give you a little bit extra, but it depends on your bike, and what it was designed for. I put 96 in my beemer cos it was designed for 96-98octane fuels, and that is manufacturer recommendation. You might want to have a look for a manufacturers recommendation, then think about it more. The 90 Corolla cage goes a bit better also on 96 even tho manufacturers say 91 is ok

    91 unless otherwise specified

96 octane is for engines that will "ping" or preignite when using 91. If your bike is meant to run on 91 and you use a higher octane, your engine's performance could deteriorate a bit as 96 doesn't ignite as readily as 91. For example, my old TL1000S had trouble starting in the morning on 96.

I believe there was a discussion about this before too. You might want to check out the forums for the (lengthy) discussions on the topic.

i run 91 in my zxr250 and its fine runs smooth as this is a 1989model thou. I can put 96 in it and its still jus as happily unless there is certain weather extremes also the difference in performance from the two octanes is so minimal that it doesnt matter and 91 is cheaper so YAY for the 91 it runs on . You can always talk to the Yamaha ppl and they should tell ya which one it is meant to use.

Slob, you probably right. Since getting my '90 Fizzer I've alternated occassionally looking for any differences. (And cos I have no idea what to run it on)
Thinking about it now, the only diff is that it's been a bitch to start 'sometimes' in the mornings. Just doesn't quite catch on.... There's 96 in it now, and I'm lucky my driveway slopes down
I'll see how it starts on 91 after the next fill....

I finally found a good way to get my KR250 starting well from cold. Use 91 in it!

When I brought the bike, the owner said, "use the highist octane you can find". I tryed straight Ave gas, 50% mix with 96, Straight 96, and it was always a sod to start when cold.

Since I put 91 octane in, it starts easy. Have yet to test it on the track for Detonation, but a good thrash up our country road showed no sign of it.

good ol kr250 i rebuild one of those a few years back, was a primo bike, kicks ass off any other 2 smoke of same year, pity its a bit more problemattic than others, but thats the joy of 2 smokes really.

i pretty much say 91 in everything unless you are told by a proper bike expert with those type of bikes. or you get it tuned to run on 96

    just my 2 cents really

just how much difference there is between kwaka/yam/suzi engines I dunno but I can vouch for the fact that my gsxr definitely has more guts when its run on 96.

anyway, who gives a flying pingu head if its a little rumbly on a cold morning? thats what the chokes for

if You see a fuel tanker leaving or pulled up at a servo go elsewhere for your gas because all the shit gets stirred up when the underground tanks are filled which can cause starting difficulty. trust me on this.
As far as avgas goes, on a roadbike, i filled up at challenge puke once and found no difference whatsoever except a ridiculous price.
I use 91 but that's the MINIMUM specified for my bike by the factory. I only use 91 because i was told that 91 is actually cleaner, and cheaper's a bonus, otherwise i used to use gull 96 which is supposedly the cleanest 96 with an actual rating of around 98. there is also a bp ultimate which is 98. never had a problem with any fuel except the newly delivered stuff as mentioned above.

Unless your bike detonates on 91 or you have a knock sensor adjusting timing, 96 will make no difference. You'll notice more difference between brands, eg. Gull vs the rest.
