Hell I'm fast - well no!

Actually I'm not, but my mate from work (in his car) reckoned I was.

I had a interesting experience this morning on the ride to work. After easing my way down the Gorge I took the left turn to head out towards Petone. Being in an observant mood I noticed that the car in front of me belonged to one of the chaps that I work with.

I passed him in the double lane section before the on ramp proper (nothing too aggressive - gentle revs, shortchange into fourth, etc). Accelerated up to 100k, then eased off to 85k for the van in front dwadling along. When I hit the motorway it was the usual story. Check the cars in front, besides, coming up behind - you know the drill. All clear, up to 105k, into the outside lane and away.

When my mate turned up at work I asked him if he'd seen me. He said that he had and was surprised how quickly I'd been going as he'd got up to 115-120k and hadn't gained on me. This was interesting as I know that I hadn't got over 105-110k (lovely morning, commuting, no hurry).

The only conclusion that I can come to is that my acceleration was so much better on the bike that there was simply no way that he could catch me doing the posted speed limit. (Does this mean that acceleration is more important than outright speed??)

No wonder other motorists can't judge our speed, or think that we're speeding everywhere. I guess I should say be careful (which you should always be), but it's a Friday so I won't.

IMHO yes. Acceleration is everything. I have noticed that when riding on busy main roads with 100kph limit, I can sit at 100-105 and catch up to lines of cars doing between 80 & 95 and carefully pick them off one by one. Don't have to be doing warp speeds but can get past safely and not break any laws or offend any drivers.
Get into windy parts and I only need a small clear straight to pass slow cars and be on my way. Too easy!

Probably a bit of speedo error and slight exaggeration thrown in there as well I'd say.

When I first got a bike[250cc] everyone with cars assumed that I would get home quicker. Not so, just takes 30 minutes wether no traffic or traffic has stopped on motorway.
Now have 650cc still the same just accerate quicker: very nice.

What else is there to do!!

yeah, i think accelartion is the way to go. it beats top speed, there are not that many that use the top speed, but , yes i know there are some that do, but, i prefer ligtning quick accelartion

    Workmate thought I was slow

The owner director of the company I work for is a totally arogant up himself spoilt born with a silver spoon in his mouth prick and he was spouting off to everyone in the lunch room one day about how fast his 2005 Holden Commodor R8 is.....I couldn't resist, I said "Mate my bike would make your car look about as fast as a kids toy out of a Macdonalds happy meal", he replied with "really" (not believing me of course) so I said "yep and if everyone wants to see how slow your car really is why don't we go outside right now and show everyone" he went bright red, started sweating and walked out of the room. Everone pissed themselves laughing (they all think he is a tosser as well).

Hmmm, way to miss out on a pay rise next round FishSlayer

Pity he didn't step outside for a drag though. As long as you didn't loop it you'd thrash him.

Nah that didn't affect my pay...lucky he ain't my boss. Funny thing was a few months later where he tried to have a go against my younger brother in his 1.6l Mazda DOHC Turbo along the Panmure Mt Wellington Highway. My brothers mazda left his holden in a shower of shit aaahahahahaha and worse still it only cost him $4k.

One thing I love on the motorway on the ZX-10 is the instant acceleration to get into a gap.
Cruising at 100km/h, need to change lane so little twist of the throttle to get there...120km/h,...140 km/h,...160 km/h...whao !! I didn't need this much accelerationm, better hit the brakes before Mr Plod sees me....all without touching the gear lever,....1000cc bikes maybe cumbersome around town (in relation to smaller bikes) but on the motorway they are a lot safer due to the effortless power.

Traffic lights are good too, half throttle - short shift and you still disappear into the distance. Settle down to 60 k's and you can see some guys nailing it in the cage to catch up. Then you hit the next red and do it all over again.
    Speed doesn't kill people.

Too true Lou. Even the GS will walk most cars from the lights. Just got to love those middle aged blokes in their Commodores. The Bandit must be an absolute hoot at the lights.

By the way the boss was talking it sounds like he's got a short something else and attempting to make up for it with big "boys" talk.

Yeah traffic lights can be a blast especially when a BOY racer attempts the impossible...far more fun on an overtaking lane, less hazards.
All ya can hear in the distance is pssssssssshhhhhhhhh!
