In search for a Gilera DNA 50.

Hey guys! I'm new here. I came across this site just a few days ago and have been looking at quite a bit of info on and about the scooter scene. A lot of what you've all posted has been a great help, thanks.

Anyway, as the title says, i'm in search for a Gilera DNA 50. The reason for my interest is because my son will be turning 16 in just a few weeks time and i'd like to get him something nice for his birthday.

At the moment he doesn't have any form of transport to and from school, work, or his mates houses. I thought hard and long about it, and decided I'd buy him a scooter since they're cheap, not as difficult to ride as a motorbike, and he wouldn't be able to attempt driving all his friends around late at night without my persmission (which I know he would do if he had a car). It'd also give him a great sense of independence I reckon.

Over the last 2 weeks when driving him around, i've pointed out a few scooters to him while trying to not give away the idea that I may be buying one. He pretty much said that he doesn't really like the look of the old traditional type scooters, but loves the look of sports bikes and the such. So I went looking around on the oh so great interweb and found the Gilera DNA 50 , and as most of you know, the thing is a very nice looking scooter.

Yeah so i've been calling around some places, mostly just hamilton dealers. None are in stock here. One of the guys on the phone mentioned that there are very few of them in the country. So i've kind of come to a dead stop.

I'd really love to know if there were some anywhere else. If any of ya's could perhaps help me out here with maybe a dealer name or something, it'd be a huge help. Otherwise I guess i'll just get him a cheaper SJ50.

    Cheers!

Hey Delax, Have you considered the street magic tr50 there are normally a lot on trade me and are by far a lot cheaper than the Gilera DNA 50. And it looks very similar. It is also a lot cheaper. Good luck with you search.

magnetos might be a good place to look for advice on your search.

P.S. please get him a jacket, gloves and full face helmet. We don't want another temporary citizen

    I think those looks awesome!

I reckon a street magic is a good option. It's small and funny looking but apparently they are good fun to ride so your son shouldn't be dissapointed with it

By the sounds of it though your son wants a motorbike more than a scooter...

Of course all 16 year old guys would want a motorbike over a scooter. I think though with a Street Magic it's not really a bike to be taken seriously and its more of a fun bike not a mode of transport

How much are you willing to pay? DNAs cost about 4 grand don't they? Could get a RG150 for a fraction of that price

You could get a decent motorbike for that

What you could do is get a cheap commuter bike first up, like a GN250 or AX100, and say you can upgrade in the near future when you feel he is ready, possibly...

Thanks for the ideas. I really should have mentioned that he's only on a restricted car license at the moment, so i'd only be able to get him a 50cc.

I really like the look of this CPI GTR. It's a bit pricey; but he's a good kid, and i'd love to see the look on his face when he gets something a little more, up there. Course, it gives me an excuse to hold things from him as well, for the next year at least .

Oh and i'll sure as hell be buying him some good protective gear. I've seen enough scooter crashes to know they aren't nice.

Hm . 50cc. 10:1 compression ratio. OHC . And 2kw. That has to be restricted, right? So what is it when unrestricted ?

I've got a suzuki TS50, not as fast to 50 as a scooter, but sit's on 55kph happily.
done 5000km, rego as moped so 70 odd bucks a year reg, no wof required. i'd let it go for $1100 if you were keen
