Sell my aussie sv650?

Hi all,

Janno here. I've just joined the happy throng and have introduced myself in the newbies section.

Could the people in the know please give me some advice - I am about to come home to New Plymouth from Brisbane and I am undecided whether to sell my bike or import it. It's a 2004 naked sv which I bought in May last year for $7500 with ventura pack. I was the second owner and it had 8500kms. It had been dropped so has a dint in the tank but apart from that and a slightly curved radiator it is all straight and very tidy (frame is fine.) I put oggys on it, new bridgestone battlaxes (BT020) and I have put another 7500k on the clock. It was regarded as a bit of a bargain buy over here, mainly because of the dint in the tank which I'm quite happy to live with.

My options are sell the bike and buy another sv650 in NZ (should be no problem to get the same as what I paid for it) or ship it over and re-compliance it. I think I'm looking at $900 for shipping to Auckland and $3-400 for compliancing?

Any thoughts? I love my bike and really don't want to sell it but I have to admit it's hardly a collector's item so I'm not sure that importing such a easily replaceable bike is the smartest thing to do.

I think it will probably boil down to the almighty dollar so can anyone give me some hints for cheap shipping? (Pump heaps of air in the tyres and row???)

And tyres - are they ok for NZ rain and roads? I am a fairly conservative rider in that I don't have the skill or experience (or desire!) to scrape around corners but even so I like to do more than just the odd weekend excursion. We have a couple of rainy days from time to time in Brisbane but 99% of the time its bone dry with booring sweepers only and no wind to speak of. About two or three roads only would be the equivalent of the Rimutakas in the whole brisbane area and every mad bastard on a bike is out there doing Rossi imitations of a Sunday. Very dangerous to be out then and an average of one rider a week is killed (mostly single rider accidents). The ambo's just love the bikes!!! But I digress.

Home sweet home is going to be a bit of a shock I think. I'll have to buy thermal undies and a rainsuit for starters.

From memory I think that the best buying is after March, but there's some alright deals on there right now.

I've never used Bridgestone BT-020's, but I'm sure they'd be fine here. I'd choose something else though, personally.

SaSlex, elderly gran is in NP and I want to spend some time with her before she gets too knackered. Plus I like the smaller towns, I've done enough of the multi-million population places to know that I'm thoroughly sick of it. I'll be slowly making my way back to the south island though. I've pm'd quasievil, thanks for that.

Toast, thanks for the tip on March buying, that could work in well. I'm not a tyre purist, though as a lightish rider I found the standard sv tyres tended to let go on corners which scared the bejesus out of me. Apparently they were designed for much heavier loads than med sized woman on small road bike. I've forgotten what they were exactly, Dunlop something or other.

I see I have "Lplate rider" under my name - what's that all about, as I'm fully licenced. Something to do with being a new poster?

Welcome back to N.P, Janno. A new K5 SV650S goes for 11990 here at the moment, the naked about a grand cheaper. Compliance shouldn't cost too much, as the Aussie spec ( E24) is EXACTLY the bikes we get here in N.Z. I suppose Uncle Helen's revenue gatherers will try to milk you for what they can! 020's work fine here, although the Road Tech Z6 rear and Sportech M1 front also works a treat. My wife's K5 S model has that combination, and it works well

Probably 6 of one half a doz of the other, I would see if you get a decent enough price if you try to sell it. Rock on into a bike shop & say you want to quit it without trading & they will offer you jack as no money to made on other bike so privately will be only way to get decent price. If you have an attachment & can't get a good price then bring it.

L plate thing is newness to board, think yourself lucky, it used to be 'scooter boy'.

Thanks guys - I think I'll sell and get a post 2003 model back home. Might even look at something else, though I like the smaller bikes only being 5ft6.

Size doesn't matter to much Janno my wife is 5'6 and she has a gsxr1000, and rides her fathers gsxr1300 and my 600.

Bikes can be changed to suit the shorter rider

I know a few bikes here that have been modded for shortarses like me, but my main problem is dolleros. I will only have exactly what I get for my bike to spend on the next, so spending extra on shortening bits and bobs is not an option. Though my main thing is I've only had my licence for a year and really enjoy the confidence boost the lighter bikes give me. I'll look at the big boy's toys later on I think. In Perth a small woman on a
BMW GS would start it on the main stand, rock forward to get off, and away she went. Not sure how she managed at the lights but she'd been around most of Western Australia and across country so must have managed just fine.

I got $8000 for my SV naked which was an '04 model I bought brand new. when I sold it, it had done 5000km

guy who bought it has put Bridgestones (I thought BT45's but could be wrong), dropped the forks through the clamps, and put cartridge emulators in it.

He was also going to put a lighter spring in the shock.
