Pukeko are a partly protected bird. They can be shot legally if your neighbour has a Fish & Game license, and only during the game bird season, which, I think, is May and August in your region. Your local Fish & Game may be interested if he goes around blasting them.
The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight underpants.
First of all, please realise I am not Christian-bashing - I am just saying that if these people PROFESS to be Christians, they are not acting in a Christian manner. Whatever happened to 'love thy neighbour'? I have many friends who are very religious and I have no problem with people who are religious. We have always found these people to be pleasant, although a little bigoted in their views (they are VERY racist), and we were genuinely sorry when their house went on the market as they had - up until now - been very good neighbours.
As for the husband being more reasonable than the wife, unfortunately they are pretty similar. His mother's cat was old and sick and needed to be put down, so to save money, he went around and shot it while it was sleeping in the sun. He's offered to do the same for us too - and although we said no, now I am worried he will do it when the cat is NOT old and sick, just sleeping!
I was under the impression pukekos were protected too, which is why we now have five on our pond - they moved here once he started shooting them. That will be mentioned in my letter to the police.
I've just picked up Smooch - $549.65 for this visit - plus the three earlier visits at $70 a time - not bad considering she was $95 from the SPCA!
As for revenge, the best revenge is living well and ignoring them. To be honest, even if we were lusting for revenge, we're too petrified to even look at them the wrong way as they will just go to the police. Apparently they have dropped the price so hopefully their house will sell quickly and we won't have to put up with them for much longer. Until then, we will keep out of their way and as the cat has to be confined to the house for four weeks (she'll love that, it's about 30C here today and she really wants to be out in the garden!), maybe THEY will pull their heads in and leave us alone too.
I'm just disgusted that anyone could go so far as ringing 111 after their neighbour rang to say their cat had been attacked. I NEVER threatened to shoot their cat (he knows we don't have a gun anyway), and after he told me to give their cat a boot I said "I will if it gets close enough, it's on my hit list now". How that translated into "I will shoot your cat" is beyond me.
What goes around, comes around, so we just hope they end up living next to the neighbours from hell when they move. Maybe the guy who used to live opposite us a few years ago - a cop we knew told us not to upset him because he lived next to the Nomads once and when they upset him, he firebombed their house!
Attached is a shot of the poor animal in question, who has done nothing more than wander around HER own property.

I doubt very much if he has even a gun licence, let alone a permit to shoot whatever he wants. I'll let the police decide if any further action needs to be taken regarding that.
We aren't into killing things, yes, we eat meat and wear leather, but if we had to kill it ourselves, we'd be vegetarians wearing vinyl! Yes, the pukekos do make a bit of noise and they do eat ducklings and eggs (they can be quite nasty in that respect) but we'd never do anything harmful to them. This neighbour reckoned they kill lambs - I asked a farmer and he said they do carry salmonella but they'd have to be crapping in the water supply for it to harm anything.
If nothing else comes out of it, at least the police will have a bit of balance to these allegations against us. The officer didn't appear to be taking many notes and I just want to make sure the police know the full story. We didn't even get asked if we had a gun (we don't) and the officer mentioned many other things he told her about - but we weren't told what they were so who knows what kind of false tales he's been telling about us.
About a week ago we wondered if we had done something to upset them as they dumped a huge pile of rotting cabbages by our boundary for their cattle. The stench in this heat is pretty horrible, but we just accepted it and didn't spend much time in that area. Glad we didn't say anything - they may have told the police we threatened to poison them!

poor bloody cat, looks pretty cheesed off there. We had similiar problems with our one cat and previous neighbours, she lost the use of one of her eyes. Pretty cut up and no one could figure out how she didn't loose it... I feel your pain

poor little cat... where I am working at the moment the cat ripped/detached a tendon in her rear leg and is inside for another week of the three she needs as enforced rest until things heal. She wasn't at all happy about the situation at first, but seems to have got used to it now. I hope your smooch handles it well...
I'm quite amazed at how well she is coping, considering it was major surgery. She leapt onto the window ledge in the dining room on Saturday night and that is about a metre off the ground. She hates being confined to the house though, and I don't blame her - it's stinking hot and we can only have the windows open a few inches or she'd escape. We live on a ridge and normally love the fact we get all-day sun, but not right now!
She certainly seems happy to be home and the painkilling drops we have to give her appear to be doing the job as she is even sleeping on that side now. Incredible how well animals recover. I just wish it hadn't happened in the first place, and I wish this bad feeling between us and our neighbours hadn't resulted.

Reading this thread has made me quite sad. I love animals (but not a great cat lover.) Having any animal suffer through an owners lack of care (your neighbour) is not good.
Like you I am an atheist, but married to a Catholic (don't ask!!!!) It really annoys me when self-proclaimed Christians only treat those they agree with in a humane manner. In my book, ALL people should be treated as YOU would want to be treated, regardless of faith, creed, colour etc.
As others have suggested, doing the revenge thing will probably only slow down the sale of their property, so it's not a good idea (even though it would feel awesome.) Once they have gone, I would trim the trees though.
