LANE SPLITTING- ANYONE GOT THE LAW

Iv heard so many different stories and laws from all different people and really want to find out for sure. Are we allowed to go down the side of traffic as long as we are in the right hand side of the lane so we are technically passing the vehicle and not undercutting the vehicle in the right lane???

If anyone has the answer and even better the act or what section it is under that would be wicked, id like to print it out and carry a copy with me at all times.

For those off you that battle auckland traffic everyday, youl understand the reason for my ??. And just for those who try to give the whole its dangerous and u shouldnt do it speech, cheers for the concern but if done safely and at the right times it can save 20mins on a ride to work, and i have thought about the possibility of being hit, so once again thanks for the concern but just after straight answers thanks

Lane splitting? What's that all about? Is that the same thing as filtering? Isn't it illegal on any day that hasn't got a Y in it?

Around and around and around with its own sound
Around and around I don't need to be there
Around and around and around with its own sound
A sound that no-one else can hear.

Charlie Boarman told me (bein his mate n all), that in the UK, they actually teach it as part of the CBT, and it's ok.. I guess within reason..

so why the UK cop is doing you for your tinted visor, it's ok if you lane split to get away from him...

To answer your Question there boy, there is no specific law for that riding style.
It all depends on the police officer that pulls you over, or how much of an arse or non arse you are.

It could be classed as one of the following:

    • An inconsiderate passing manoeuvres
    • Dangerous driving,
    • Reckless driving
    • or may just pass you by.

O TO HAVE SUCH POWER :spudwhat:

Usually when lanesplitting you pass the cops by. If you are splitting, generally it means that the cops are stuck in traffic, so they might not like it, but hey, they've never chased me up about it. Just make sure you check in the back windows of all Holdens and Fords before making the manoeuvre for the little square lights, and always just shift to the furthest lanes to split from the cops when you see them. If you aren't in a hurry, just settle in a couple of cars back. But if you want to not give them a chance, then just change to the furthest lane from them and split quicker so they can't see your plate, this works for me.

Once I was splitting on the motorway (3 lanes) and I saw some cock in a Holden further up move over to block my progress, but I knew I could fit through anyway. This kind of pissed me off, so I nailed it through the small gap full on the throttle, and just as I passed he let out a loud "whoop" noise from his police box Scared the shit out of me, cause I was right next to it. Still, I didn't stop, just moved to between the left and middle lanes so he couldn't catch my plate, and hooned up that way.

There was an letter in the Kiwi rider mag a few months ago by a high ranking police official that basicly said if you are doing it on the right hand side of the car and do not cross the center line it is legal so long as all the traffic has its indicators on to turn left. Other than that it is illegal but it would be a hard cop to give a ticket so long as you were not being a complete dick about it.
Here in CHCH we filter up both sides of the traffic and the cage drivers dont seem to care too much neither do the cops (yet).
