    Intelligence says that the wearing of appropriate gear is not something to be sneezed at.......would any of you step up to the crease in a serious game of cricket without shinpads, gloves, helmet (& box for those with external plumbing) ?? Or not suit-up as hockey goalie?
    The cost (in un-necessary pain) to the individual is their problem - fine, suffer if you want. But the cost to the rest of us is not only in treatment. It plays a part in the waiting lists for elective surgery, much of which becomes life-threatening when postponed, and at the very least causes serious loss of quality of life. If I was waiting for surgery to correct, say, a degenerative knee disorder, would I be happy to know that continual postponement of the surgery was in part down to fuckwits of the shorts/jandals type?
    I THINK NOT!
    Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

    Skin does grow back- it is also the largest organ your body has, and if you lose/damage enough of it you can die as a result. Skin grafts need constant and long term medical attention- ever seen a burns victim in one of those elastic type suits-well, gravel rash has the same effect as burns. I don't want to go there, I'll be a nana and don my leathers thanks.

    I remember reading about the guys in the 1930's that would get on bikes in salt lakes and go for speed records, wearing only a helmet, swimming pants and a pair of shoes. Until one of them arsed off at 120 mph, could you imagine the pain that would cause.

    Not this again

    "ladies and gentlemen, we are approaching the nanny state, for those of you departing at this point we would request you leave all personal responsibility and self respect behind you and give yourselves over completely to a higher authority. Those free spirits that are remaining on-board for the rest of the journey, please sit back relax and do exactly what you want to, anarchy junction won't be long arriving"

    Biking is meant to be about freedom.

    I should be free to kill myself or place myself at risk by riding a bike naked or maybe skydiving, mountaineering, swimming in rips while drunk as a chicken. overeating or perhaps ( unlikely) overexercising.
    They could all put me in the ICU on ACC.

    Live your own life, yes we should gear up or perhaps learn to love roadrash or perhaps dying young or being wheelchair bound . or maybe none of these things if we can follow the gold standard, and play the "dont crash, cheat death and no hospital either" card.

    Practise and experience may make not crashing more repeatable, but gear is just like everything else in the riding outcome equation;
    how cold or hot are you , how tired are you , how focused , road conditions weather conditions traffic conditions etc.
    They all combine for the outcome of a particular riding experience.

    Essentially if everything else is working 'right' you shouldnt need the gear, and even when you do need it , it may or may not help.

    It get into the high 30's here in summer and even then I am still wearing boots gloves armoured trou + jacket and a helmet.

    But if i dont want to wear all of that crap that should be ok too.

    I dont think it should necesarily be encouraged, as the risk isnt everyones cup of tea, but I am against losing any more freedom in nz therefore I fully endorse your right to be wearing only a kilt if you were select this attire as your riding gear of choice.

    You dont get freedom back from the government.
