Welly M/Cylists - Helston Road (and others) UPDATE

    Alrighties ….

I have had some talks with the WCC Engineers.

Helston Road – The tar snakes were applied excessively by the contractor. The road is basically a stuff up. However it is still under a maintenance period (Basically a warranty) so short of resurfacing the road like Newlands Road, there’s not a lot to be done. There are skid tests being done apparently but not sure how relevant these are for us.

HOWEVER……I have stated that it is extremely dangerous for a motorcyclist in the dry and more so in the wet. What WCC want is for groups like us or organisations to write in stating how dangerous it is so that they can build a case against the contractor and get them to rectify the road-surface.

Woodridge/Kentwood Drive pothole – this has been now logged and will be repaired as required.

Newlands Road - Triangle road markings – I’ll check these out thoroughly tonight on my way home, and write a little spiel on this tomorrow to see if anything can be done about it.
    - potholes and fire markings – I’ll also log where these are (ie outside a street number) and get these attended to.

Bike Parks in Mercer Street and Grey Street – unfortunately there’s nothing that can be done about this. Just gotta get there earlier

So something can be done about these (with the exception of the bike park), we just have to action it.

Hope I’ve helped, feel free to let me know anymore issues you may have.

    Cheers
    NDMZ

Great stuff NDMZ~ good to hear that someone is being proactive and doing something to get the roads sorted. Infinitely more productive than just complaining about it on KB. Bling for you!

    Good stuff NM.

The "triangle" markings are of course the new Give Way markings. They were adopted to reduce the amount of road marking - as the intention is that as roads are resealed they will no longer include the words GIVE WAY. In the meantime however most intersections will have both the words and the triangle - making it worse (in terms of picking a line).

The size and location of the triangles is fixed.

Thanks for the replies and also the blings, peoples.

I have decided on the best approach for dealing with the Helston Road issue.
Can I please get all of the people (myself included) who feel strongly about this Helston Road safety issue to email in their objections (Pwalo, I know you've done this once, but again too please) to my email address and use the title "Helston Road". I will build a case for us getting something done about it.
    Please send to turbo@paradise.net.nz.

Look forward to some masterpeices of writing

Cheers mate. I'll drop you an email. You were a brave man unleashing the ZX10 on Helston last night.

    This is awesome...thanks.

The main beef I have with the give way triangle is that it covers almost all of the lane and normally I've started a slight lean by that stage, or are on the brakes.
The old give way writing was just as bad although you could at least ride in between the letters.

It's great to see some action!!!
