Unhappy I Crashed.... But I Didn't Bin it

Hey everyone, well i knew it was going to happen and it happened today..

I went for a ride with Milky this afternoon and we took a turn off from Scenic Drive, he was leading. We entered the first hairpin that tightened up considerably and unexpectedly, Milky slowed and started braking a bit.

    I now had two options:
1- to tighten my line and get more lean on, which i was capable of doing and could do, but the result of that would be smashing into the back end of Milky causing both of us to bin it and get hurt

Or 2- to gently brake and swing it a bit wide slightly onto the wrong side of the road (not completely on the wrong side)

I chose option 2..... Which was good in the end, but bad for me Well it was just my luck that a car was coming up the other way, i was doing about 30-40kmh and was hoping the car was going quick enough for me to just miss it and swing behind it... Thats what i would have liked to have happend......... Well my right peg hit the mag wheel of the car (creating a channel about 1 cm wide and deep right across the mag) and my front wheel grazed the car followed by my brake lever scratching the upper rear 3/4 panel, my fairing then proceeded to rip the rear bumper of the car completely off.....

This all happened and i didn't fall off , I stayed on the bike and then stopped on the side of the road, to check damage exchange details and all the rest of it.... The stink thing was that Milky and I werent even going hard....

Result is:my bike now has a cracked lower fairing and smashed centre fairing (the one that holds the 2 lower fairings together), a hole in the radiator, a slightly bent right rear set and possibly twisted forks (only very slightly twisted though....)

I won't be riding it for the next week or 2 and i dont know how im going to survive , well ill still be riding my work bike hehehe...

Sorry to hear that bud but seems F-in miraculous (and a credit to you) that you didn't come off.
Hope bike doesn't need too much money spent to get it sorted.
    Good luck

Hey guys, thanks for the comments Yea CSL the guy was pretty good about it, he said he was amazed i stayed on the bike and didnt get hurt.

yea chris the damage is mainly cosmetic, but because i hit another car im claiming on insurance (which i know will cause problems when i insure my next bike ) $400 for the excess.....

You were obviously following way to close if you ran the risk of going up Milky's muffler. It also sounds like you were doing the other deadly practice of riding off the tail-light of the bike in front rather than riding your own ride.

Sorry to hear about the damage to the bike and am glad you okay.....

Did a similar thing myself once on the motorway.

Did you actually think of the two options before or after you choose one? - as the option you choose is typical of the 7 deadly sins that Keith Code talks about - sounds to me like you instinctively dropped the throttle and hit the brake - rather than made a conscious decision. No harm in admitting it - that is exactly how I had my first accident - exc. I went ploughing spuds on the side of the road.

Yep i was following too close i admit that and as you said did the dumb thing of following his brake light , but i honestly did think about increasing the amount of countersteering to drop it in more (i learnt that in a book too) and have practiced it in corners hence why i have got my knee down, but ofcourse with my inexperience and stupidity i was following to close and didnt want to knock Milky off... So as you said i closed the throttle and touched the brakes...

I guess i was thinking "oh it will be fine, we are only going really slow" Well it was a costly lesson and one that has definately been learned

Cheers for the comments Wkid_one , i like critisim as it improves my riding

This wouldn't have happened if you had come power-riding with the rest of us down to Ngaruawahia/Raglan today! :sneaky2:

Hope you're up & running for the April 23rd open day dude.

Wasnt meant to be criticism - just observations.....I made, and I guess many have, the exact same mistakes. I still make them today....

Following the brakes lights is as easy to do in the car as it is on a bike....we all get guilty of it - and as for following to close...well - I have trouble counting to two at the best of times - let alone on a bike.

Insurance is pretty much a one time claim, especially @ your age. They really don't want to insure bikes. It will affect lots of things in your future if you make this claim.
Since the car driver sounds like a reasonable person. Maybe you can talk to him about getting a few quotes, him or you may know a panel beater that might do the work a bit cheaper. Concentrate on getting his car fixed first, forget your bike till later, (fix the radiator of course). See if you can borrow some money of your folks or a mate.
Leave the insurance for when you really need it. Hopefully this incident isn't the time.

Yep - you will get drilled on the insurance - this will be esp. painful when you go for the bigger bike.

The unfortunate thing is - that with the other car being involved it is more than likely he will demand it be done via his insurance company - which if you then decide to pay the costs out of your own pocket rather than your insurance - you will pay absolute top dollar to get the work done on their car.

Thanks for the tips guys, the more i think about it the more i want to do it by paying for it to be done rather than going through the insurance company..... The problem is getting the mag wheel (the gouge was about 10mm wide 5 mm deep and right across the width of the mag) luckily the panels weren't dented and all it needs is to be sanded and painted, the bumpers im not worried about because of the easy to get and the fixtures on the car (not the bumper) were all fine.... With my bike ive got spare fairings anyway so thats sorted.....

Anyone got any tips on where to get this stuff??????

And yep Dangerous, i definately learn from my cock ups (definately going to make sure i have 2 seconds gap....)

    Once again Cheers guys
