They maybe longer in same cases but definately more enjoyable,

I've had people say my backroad routes are longer than the main highway.
I ask them three things:
Don't you like riding your bike?
Do you like cars endangering life?
And do you like contributing to the state coffers via the highway revenue department?

I prefer to take the long way... I actually belong to a wee group of HD riders that call themselves "the Stragglers". We have been known to turn the 130km journey from Akld to Hamilton into a 2 day ride with an overnite Sesh!

didn't touch on State Highway 1 the whole way there. Instead we went along 100km's of fantastic back roads before we even got to Ngaruawahia, actually the back-road I am talking about IS a State Highway but it certainly didn't feel or look like 1. Blissful winding roads.... At one point I was riding along thinking " OMG! this is Motorcycling Nirvana", the scenery was beautiful

I stuffed that one up at Christmas. Headed for Clevedon but wound up in an industrial estate at the back of Papakura. Bugga!

There is a stretch in the middle (about 10k) that is unsealed but it's mostly more like hard dirt than gravel. Even sprotbike riders shouldn't have any difficulty.

I passed some sort of full dresser in a couple of weeks ago, both rider and passenger looked happy enough. The last time I was at the Whangamomona Pub several bikes came through: a BMW tourer, a Yamaha FZ750 sprotbike, and a Harley FXRS or similar.

As another Hornet rider said to me, "Once you've been that way you won't want to go to Taumarunui any other way".

That sounds like a cool ride. I go to both Taranaki and Taumaranui regularly but 10 kms of gravel is a fairly long stretch and I always worry about my belt. Plus although it might be hard dirt now whats the bet it'll be re-graded soon. I used to happily ride out to my mates place out the back of Wainui (on hard dirt) and then 1 day i visited the day after the grader had been. Ye gads it was boulder city with tree branches in the mix! Scary stuff on my Buell ( not being able to put my feet flat on the ground if needed... ), found myself wishing I was back on a HD, they handle that sort of shit no worries!

Actually haven't done the entire route.. always just to Whangamomona pub and back to stratty.. Very interesting corners on the Lost Highway.. especially with loose pepples on it.. causes some puckering moments!
