Well, I watched it. Not all that funny (except for the Pope saying "a chick bleeding from her vagina is not a miracle - chicks do that all the time"). But certainly nothing that any sensible christian could object to . And , in fact, I thought it contained more practical christianity than most sermons. Some people need to get out more, me thinks. I would think the biggest complaint would come from Alcoholics Anonymous.

Don't see what the poblem is :spudwhat:

After all it was about doing something for yourself rather than getting someone/something else to solve your own problems (a rather too common situation to day I might add).

I used to love Southpark, and thought it was ground breaking comedy, but since the Family Guy has emerged, they have lost ground to smarter, less obviously offensive shows, that have more thought, and less blatant gratuity, and this episode just sounds like a cry for attention imo.

Catholics are a funny breed, Southpark has been a blasphemous show since day 1, portraying Jesus as living in Southpark, and having his own TV show, and swearing, and generally not being anything near the Son of God he is, but the minute their precious "Mother Mary" or the Pope are seen in a bad light, they go mental.
Personally I think this shows up major faults in the Catholic doctrine, and makes it appear cultish.

I didn't watch it but apparantly C4 only recieved 4 complaint calls about it...

Was talking to a friend of mine last night about it, and he said "Why would the religious folks be complaining about it? Surley if they are as religious as they like to make out they wouldn't be watching a program like that in the first place?"

    Too true...

I did watch after all. It was a damning indictment of the victim mentality if nothing else. Typically, the very people lampooned in the show were the ones offended by it.
BTW. having seen a clip of the protesters outside TV3/C4, Christianity is not going to get recruits to a glamourous group, are they?

You mentioned that Christians where protesting... what the hell is with that?

    Christians are different to Catholics...

Christians believe Mary is dead, not a god or anything worth worshiping or praying to... just the lady who popped Jesus out... so why would they care?

Well the media thing worked I would bet that more people watched C4 last night than any other time since it first whent to air.

    Good marketing!

As for the show dont realy know what the hyp was about. It was a typical South Park episode I actualy found the fact that stans dad has a illness more interesting than the mary thing.

Hmmm.. Stayed up and watched it... Not a huge South Park fan but it sure has it's moments!

Several points story wise came to mind (no really, I do think like that)

First one was, the show was more about optining out of your responsibilities by handing it all over to a higher power, in this case it was Stans fathers drinking and his enforced membership of AA.

Secondly, the bleeding statue thing was not really gratuitous, it was an essential element in the story. Ie believing that an inanimate object could 'cure' your lack of self discipline...

Thirdly, bleeding onto the Pope was kinda funny BUT was required for the Pope to debunk the miricle and for randy to realise that he stopped drinking himself, nothing to do with the statue.

So, the story itself was quite a good parable, much like Jesus himself used in the New Testament AND I believe that if the story writers had not used iconic catholic images and had instead used Bhuddist ones (I assume they have miricle places etc) then I'm sure it would have passed our screens without a mumble!

So why has quite a good little story created a fuss? Well because the Virgin mary DID splat blood out her anus (later declared to be the vagina - a mistake most priests, even celibate ones would be hard pressed to make) all over the Pope and other assorted people! So you have 2 iconic images used to illustrate the point!

Sadly, the Catholic Church has had a history of some heavily promoted but pretty dodgy miricles / relics and some dodgy Popes as well. So I guess that they are fair game. Mary on the other hand is central to cathlocisim (sic) and probably more reverred than God. From a marketing angle, it's their point of difference so naturally they have to defend it!

However, it is my belief that the howls of protest stem more from the fact that there IS a new Pope on the throne and a pretty conservative one at that! The church took some heavy blows in recent years with lots of kiddie fiddlers turning up in the ranks and them not really acting to stop it with any real conviction (until caught out). However, perhaps they feels thats done and dusted and it's time for the Vatican to start holding the line.

As far as I can see... Look out for a few more efforts to return to the glory days! Almost makes me wish I had learnt latin.... Not.....

ps - I really enjoyed the 'Classic Album' show afterwards - Dark Side of the Moon - excellent doco, I'd buy that series on DVD!

South Park was just typical southpark. I think the Catholics are just jumping on the protest bandwagon. All religions deserve to be lampooned when they act so pompous and self important, especially Catholics and their dumb-arse pope. I thought the idea was to worship God, not some cantankerous old German Fart. How dare they try to tell me what I am permitted to watch. They should sort out kiddy fiddlers et.al. in their own ranks before getting all high and mighty. It is no wonder they are becoming more and more irrelevant in the modern world

Good point Paul. I haven't seen groups of Christians in public prayer groups praying for the victims of pervert Priests.

Very true! Doubtless it was (in some way) the victims fault for tempting the Priests.. (pt)

Floyd was great and although it has almost become a bit over done! Dark Side of the Moon is always great! Bit of a shock to see them then and now but classic to see they still had the moves on the instruments! I got to say, I'd watch that anyday over South Park... Or anything else on TV...

Roman Catholicism is a 'denomination' (if you will) of Christianity. Protestants (and their break-off group Anglicans), the x-Orthodoxies (Russian-, Eastern-, Oriental-, etc), J.W.'s, Mormons, Unified Chruch, Assyrian Chruch, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal Chruch, Adventist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc... are all Christians. (bloody oath, this list goes on and on - you get the point, I'm not adding any more!).
Additional = "The last U.S. survey" (1995 Census) listed over 150 different groups identifying themselves as Christian.
