Yep, the law requires the plate to be on the front of the car (I know cause I got a ticket for having it in the windscreen when one of the bolts holding at the front fell out). And those sticker ones are illegal too BTW...Originally Posted by Sniper

Quite a few yrs ago I was actually pulled over for having an obscured plate. It was in the days of the BIG ones and I had bent it to accommdate a pack. When the copper told me why he had pulled me over I was genuinely surprised and explained the pack bla bla and that i was just on my way back from New Plymouth having been to see Jethro Tull. Suddenly he forgot all about the 'Law' and was more interested in the concert and proceeded to tell me how bummed he was that he couldn't get the wkend off... etc etc... Nice cop, no ticket just a warning (and a smile on my face)!

A couple of question's ...
What about all the cars etc that have a bike rack and push bike on the tow bar, presumably they're all eligable for a $200 ticket too?
How about mounting the plate upside down on your car/bike? It's not obscured, and not hard to read from a photo, but it would be damned hard to read if someone didn't get a reasonable look at it. Just a thought.
The views expressed above may not match yours - But that's the reason my Dad went to war - wasn't it?
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, .... but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out,... shouting "man, what a ride"!!!
ahh the number plate
never cleaned one
never will
the one part of my bike that doesnt gets cleaned
A mate of mine runs the plate on his TL upside down and dirty. He has been pulled over many a time with it upside down with no finantial backlash. He has been forced to clean it on the side of the road before, with the offered $200 incentive.
There is no dark side of the moon, really, as a matter of fact. Its all dark...
Rode to work on the LS400 which had the big square plate on the back and my rego in a holder that was bolted to teh bottom of the plate itself. Parked up, went inside to work, later I came outside for a ciggy, lit up, took a drag and then realised that I was seeing a hell of a lot more rear wheel than I ought to. Bloody plate had snapped off. There was still a piece of one corner trapped under one of the screws so I left it there so I could prove it did snap off.Originally Posted by loosebruce
It was a couple of days til payday so I had to ride back home and to work and back the next day without a plate at all. The day after I rode to work with no plate, picked up new plate and replacement rego sticker and discovered I had to ride home with the new small rectangulat palte in my pack cos the stupid fucking thing didn't have holes drilled in it ready for mounting. Plate didn't go on until later that even when I was able to borrow a drill off a friend.
Fortunately I didn't get pulled over on four journeys between Te Awamutu and Hamilton without a plate.
Motorbike Camping for the win!
Keep it clean and visible - NOT worth the trouble if you get caught.
The anonymous riders that I know of who purposely have dirty plates, taped plates, bent plates, no plates, etc are the same guys who won't stop if asked to by the powers that be...that's why they do it!![]()

Obscure Number Plate, Failed to Display Number Plate in Approved Manner, -they have an answer to all your little problems....Originally Posted by far queue
Just depends on the cop, got pissed-off one day, with a group in a 'people-mover' following another vehicle, right on the n0-passing lines with poor visibility a bozo pulled out and passed us - couldn't get number due to about 100 mountain-bikes hanging off the tow-bar mount, arghhh!
And I bet if he/she had got pulled over and given a ticket for Obscured Plate they would have done their prunes at the unfairness of it.....

Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.
The last digit of my plate is partially obscured by the rego holder. Bearing in mind that I bought the bike new, and presumably it got a warrant with the holder in place, am I still at risk of a ticket if I get pulled up by a cop with a bee in his bonnet??
I guess you COULD be - after all cops hear all sorts of excuses all the time and one of the more common ones is "It was like that when I got it"Originally Posted by Aitch
On the other hand I wouldn't sweat it, most unlikely you would get a ticket for that!

Is an upside down plate illegal?
I was told of a person in Whangarei recently who was approached by a cop who noticed that the plate on her Honda CRV was upside down.
She explained that her husband had put it on that way after asking their son,a solicitor,if he could find anything on the law books to say it was not allowed.
The cop went to his car and came back after half an hour and said all the book says is a plate must be affixed in the approved manner but does not say what that is.
Many trailers have their plates mounted vertically and it doesn't attract comment.
Hard to read upside down
