James Bond device not enough to escape long arm of law
    24 February 2006

A Tauranga man who used a James Bond-style device to hide his motorcycle licence plate from police was fined $1640 after crashing into a patrol car during a high-speed pursuit.

Garry Leonard Muzyka, 46, had a hand lever next to the fuel tank, which enabled him to tilt the number plate so it was horizontal and could not be read, the Bay of Plenty Times reported.

He was convicted and fined after pleading guilty to one charge each of exceeding the 100kph speed limit, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.

No charge was laid in relation to the number plate device.

and did he hit the police car, or did the police car just happen to pull out 'at the wrong time'?

how is a lever you pull a james bond invention

If it was a button sure but a lever next to your tank sounds more like a hill billy invention!

I was thinking of a hinge with a specific level of friction that lifts at 60+kmhr.
Or an electronic lifter either automatic or operated via a button on the dash.
Definately more of a James Bond device than a stink lever

"Journalistic Licence", old bean, "crude hick method of hiding number plate not enough to escape long arm of law" does not have quite the same ring or sales-boosting potential. The bugger who wrote the headline probably doesn't get to go to the movies a lot and so his impression of James Bond is probably based more on The Hardy Boys Adventures and the old "Get Smart" series.

That won't work. What if you were doing bad things and had to slow under 60 for some reason i.e. a slow corner or to avoid traffic??
On the flipside, what if you were legit and ride past a cop on the motorway with your plate up?

and then the roads will be safe from "dangerous speeders" because there'll be another sort of "toll" request sent out if you cover the distance between two of the scanners in less than an "acceptable" time...

RFID tags have a range of about 3 feet though, I thought? Anyway, lets not get into a Big Brother debate, lets just laugh about "James Bond" inventions.

ooo sorry Mr Officer.. no idea how that tinfoil managed to wrap itself around the unit.. what luck..

actually, that ain't gonna work.. every vehicle would have to have one fitted, or a snap shot of their plate and a bill sent.. no RFID and no plate = no bill..

your so boring and predictable, heres what you do

    1. scan rf ids for transmitting freq
    2. hide near police station
    3. listen to their rf id's
    4. make you own rf id using the cops code
    5. drive around all the toll roads you can find

Hey, don't knock the guy for trying. Evolution is where most things come from, just cos he was using Version 1.0 doesn't mean to say it's a bad thing. That's how you get V1.1 and onward. Some of us are still using Version -1.0...

Of course, getting caught... now that's just really bad luck. And expensive too if he damaged the bike. Wonder how many successful runners he'd had before?

why worry about the tolls at all Buggy? Usually free for bikes. Even the ones in the states were free for bikes.
