    Welcome to my world !

It's not really a contract issue, the company probably doesn't officially EXPECT those hours, it's just that sometimes you HAVE to do that to keep things running.

No real answer I'm afraid, I just sort of worked out an under the table agreement with my boss "I have to come in outside OFFICIAL hours. I'm willing to do that if YOU turn a blind eye to me coming in late when things are quiet, or taking off for a few hours in the middle of the day (when things here are almost always quieter). And neither of us tell anyone official". He agreed (cos he's been there himself) and it works OK. Overall I guess I average about 45 hours a week , which I'm OK with. Some weeks more some less.

If you really have to work that NUMBER Of hours, as opposed to the SPREAD , then , yeah, time for some blunt talking. But I'm guessing it's the spread. Effectively, I'm supportiung a 24x7 operation on 8x5 hours.

Your on the ball Scumdog, writing tickets is much easier than fixing computers, it takes less time too, much much less stress knowing you wont be on the receiving end of one and you're going to be 100% more popular for all the wrong reasons.

    Haha nothing against the Police.

Yeah, looked at IT stuff and thought "hmm, what are the chances of getting shot at, beaten up, run over, spat at, despised, have bottles thrown at me have my kids threatened, slagged off on Kb etc etc ?" -not much - so decided the police would be the better option...

Besides how often do you hear somebody being introduced at a party as "this is Bill, he's an IT worker" and then hearing the pin drop for about 10 metres around you??

And as for tickets? Obviously you have never suffered a nasty paper cut or a jab from an errant Bic pen, it ain't all beer and skittles in the ticket world matey!!

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Sniper.

Your employer has an obligation under The Health and Safety in Employment Act to monitor stress. And won't want to find themselves in an Employment Court . Do as advised - ring DOL and get some advice. And start documenting the hours, the workload ,the demands.

I work in IT, in my first job I was putting in 60 hour weeks, working most weekends and getting paid for a 40 hour week, with "time in leiu" that I never got to take.

It wasn't till I left that job and started having a normal life again did I realise how bad things had been and how much it had affected me and my family. That's when you say "why did I do it?" and more importantly "why did I let them do that to me?" I was my own worst enemy for putting up with it.

But when you are in the middle of it, just fighting fires and trying to get through the day you don't see how bad it is.

I heard later that my replacement put up with it for 2 weeks, then demanded they hire 2 more staff. Which they did !!
