What exactly is it doing? Is the volume control very "crackly" when moved, and cutting out altogether?

Hi ya Virago
Yup it cuts out completely and then it might come back for a little bit and then it goes again...its working again at the moment....possessed maybe?!?!

Sounds like dust in the volume control contacts. Do you have access to a compressed air supply? Take the cover off the cabinet (disconnect from power first), then blow air through the volume control while turning it up and down. Usually works a treat.
The same problem can occur with selector switches (for switching between radio/tape/CD), can usually be fixed the same way.
Make sure the air supply is fairly dry - sometimes the first blast from a compressor is full of water.

Thanks heaps for that Virago!!! I owe you a beer!

Actually my Harman/Kardon AVR 80 H/theater amp is playing silly buggers with the volume at the moment too... When its in 3 stereo mode (RF, C, LF)
I turn it up and the two main speakers go up in volume but the centre stays where it is until you turn it down one click(on teh remote) and then it catches up to the front 2, volume wise... also in stereo mode when I crank it up(about 3/4 maybe) it will cut out and then come back on and will repeat this till you turn it down... the way to fix that is to slap it a few times(like Fonzi ...hey) and it will come right for a while but i want a permanent fix... are these problems related? it could be a bit dusty in there, could it do with a good clean? is it on its way out?(i hope not it cost me 3.5k for the amp alone
) who is bill?
