And thus offends against one of the prime policies of KB. Under no circumstances may anyone suggest that crashing a motorcyle may be painful, let alone horridly so. Every properly conditioned motorcyclist should know that not only is crashing inevitable, but it is a joke, from which you will always walk away laughing, provided you are wearing the proper magic gear. In the country of the blind, the one eyed man is not king, he is ostracised and put to death.

    Don't believe it?

The picture below is almost exactly what I had on my right knee, luckily I only have the resulting skin graft in it's place (which still looks very unusual, skin is smooth but rippled, and the round/rectangular area is deeply recessed into my leg). Then I still have the rectangular red patch on the opposite leg where they took the skin graft from...

And finally, I'm left with bad drainage from the feet/ankle/lower calf, which we presume is either from the lost tissue in the area, or from the deep gash behind the same knee, from side to side...

How many times did people tell me to get proper pants? Many. Did I listen? No! (although I had other partial reasons, none were good enough!). I was wearing a Cordura jacket, and I had no road rash/burns to my upper body...

HOWEVER, no gear can stop the deceleration injuries which result from coming to a stop instantly/quickly (hitting a bridge, or a car/wall/post/etc...). Those leave you with small brain bleeds, torn aorta, arm's nerve detachments from spine, broken ribs, punctured lungs, bruised liver, broken pieces off vertabrae, dental damage, etc... Oh, and the doctor telling your parents to prepare for your death, resulting in high blood pressure (thereafter) for the entire family, depression,etc...

Riding is not a fucking joke, take it seriously (like most people here do) or join the List or KB memorial pages...

PS - I think it is the perfect time for this type of message...

No. You don't know riding is dangerous. You *think* riding is dangerous. For other people. Not for you.

We get the "OOOH riding a motorcycle is SOOO dangerous" spiel from our workmates, family and friends already, we don't need it from you too.
Yes. You do need it from me. Because after 40 years I *KNOW* riding is dangerous. And , in that knowledge, I choose, coldbloodedly, after looking at all those pictures , to keep on riding. If you are still choosing to stick your head in the sand , and refuse to confront reality, then I haven't told you enough.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.

(And as Mr Stonechucker says, magic gear is a myth. it helps. But doesn't guarantee).

Show your Mum those pictures. Tell her " that might be me, next". And keep riding.

We already do wear our gear, well most of us, and those who don't aren't going to be scared into it.

If my mum sees that Ride to Die page because you posted it, I will personally come around and make you look like one of the people in the pictures.
    Grrr!

(Can you tell christmas has put me in a good mood?)
First of all, Grow Up (I don't red rep people, that's my equivelant)! If your mum stopped you riding after seeing that webpage, you shouldn't be riding in the first place.

Second, Don't Threaten People, here at least. Go up to someone in person and say that if you feel so macho (after school/uni that is).

And finally, any time is a good time for safety messages. Again, you shouldn't be riding if you are trying to hide from them, or hide them from people in your family (who are still your legal guardians I presume...)? Which would be totally fine, if you weren't such a "hard", "staunch" little fella

All right all right. Respect to Ixion.
Just a bit grumps is all.

If it makes me sound less like a dork, I am enrolled for a roadsafe riding course with Andrew at the end of Feb, and my aforementioned mum got me "Proficient Motorcycling" for my brother and I.

    Sorry Kneescraper.

I can understand how most people don't like this. But in my thoughts... thanks to the person who posted it.

As a newbie to riding I can never have enough reminding how easy it is to slip up, to forget just how vulnerable we are and how important it is to ride defensively.

I'm glad I read the link.
