Can't say iu think much of the guy, but it's a free country. If his devotees want to make him a present of a pile of dosh, i guess that's their right. No-one's forcing them to. Adults making decisions of their own free will and all that. Freedom necessaily includes the freedom to do stupid things.

Interesting point, Ixion. Freedom to follow a cause etc is to be encouraged, but once that cause is being followed, freedom sadly goes missing.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

I am one of the annoying people who has no serious issue with people of faith, but I too find myself feeling uneasy when this guy is in the public eye.
The church itself bases its doctrine fresh out of the bible, which is the best basis for a recognised "Christian" church, but something about Tamaki makes me a bit jumpy, I could just be being silly, but its a very real feeling I get.

They are starting to come across as semi-cultish imo, paying a little too much homage to their church leader, and not to their recognised God.

Press bias or not - the track record of his ilk is pretty shabby too.

    snip

    ...everything is alright!
He also fits the 'suicidal tendancies' song 'send me your money'

Welcome to the church of Suicidal
We'll have a service and wonderful recital
But before we go on, there's something I must mention
An important message I must bring to your attention
I was in meditation and prayer last night
I was awakened by a shining bright light
    Over head, a glorious spirit
He gave me a message and you all need to hear it
"Send me your money", that's what he said
He said to "Send me your money"
Now if you can only send a dollar or two
There aint a hell of alot I can do for you
But, if you want to see heaven's door
Make a check out for five hundred or more
"Send me your money", do you here what I'm saying?
    "Send me your money"

Here comes another con hiding behind a collar
His only god is the almighty dollar
He aint no prophet, he aint no healer
He's just a two bit goddamn money stealer
    Send me your money
Send it, you got to send it
    Send me your money
    You hear what I'm saying?
    Send it, send it
    Send me your money
Now how much you give is your own choice
But to me it's the difference between a prosche and a Rolls Royce
I want you to make it hurt when you dig into your pocket
I want you to make it hurt!
We'll take cash, we'll take checks
We'll take credit cards, we'll take jewelry
We'll take your momma's dentures if they got gold in them
So whose gonna be the next king of the fakers
Whose gonna take the place of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker?

[QUOTE=ManDownUnder]I've not seen anything outside what the press offers up (and lets face the facts - they can be a little biased toward the "dramatic")...

Well, he used to be broadcast unedited on TV2 early in the mornings, between 6 and 7. So I've seen what he's offering a couple of times. Take it from me, hes an A-grade cock knocker.

The public track record, granted, is very sensationalistic, and doesn't lend itself to propagating the faith in a positive light, but being devils advocate means I have to draw attention to the things these people do which is unseen, and un-media "raped" which is the distribution of money to where it is actually needed, and the very real grass roots outworking of the very fundamental teachings of God, where the hungry are fed, and the naked are clothed.

The media will always come in at an angle that suits the desires of the masses, but in doing so, leaves the whole picture obscured with prejudice.

All that aside, Tamaki sets off alarm bells.

Pope Brian has a new hmmmmm. Some of you may know the tune....hum along on your knees...

    I will follow Him
Follow Him wherever He may go,
And near Him, I always will be
For nothing can keep me away,
    He is my destiny.

    I will follow Him,
Ever since He touched my heart I knew,
There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love.

I love Him, I love Him, I love Him,
    And where He goes,
    I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow.
he'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
from now until forever, forever, forever

    I will follow Him,
Follow Him wherever He may go,
There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love...

    We will follow Him,
Follow Him wherever He may go,
There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep us away, away from His love...

    I love Him
    (Oh yes I love Him)
    I'll follow
    (I'm gonna follow)
    True love
(He'll always be my true, true love)
    Forever
    (Now until forever)
I love Him, I love Him, I love Him,
    And where He goes,
    I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow,
He'll always be my true love,
My true love, my true love,
    From now until forever,
    Forever, forever...

There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love

Truth be that the decision was made by two or three 'managers,' who informed the church members and being the sheep of the flock stood idly by not daring to say a word against it as this would be interperted as a criticism of the church leadership and Tamiki. Seen this sort of thing in other organisations. Stand up and be counted and you are ostricised.

    Dictionary definition of a cult:
A system or community of religious worship and ritual.
That makes the catholics, anglicans, muslims to name a few, cults with all the connotations the word possesses.
Tamaki is cashing in on stupidity and fear and no different to any other 'cult'.

Tell ya what though, no matter how much contemptuous I find his cult, I can't help but admire his business acumen! How long till he sells to the Aussies for $700 million?
