    Getting the seat off a (2005) GN250

    Hi,

(Sorry if this is the wrong forum)

A mate is stuck in town (Wellington) with a GN250 that won't start. Apparently it's been getting worse over the last few days - after it blew over in the wind (nice oil stain outside my place).

It's got juice, but not much, so I'm suspecting a battery that needs attention. (caused by loose wires in the charging circuit; lost electrolyte; ...?)

Anyway, I couldn't find any obvious way to get the seat off (so I can start having a basic look) - anyone know how that's done on a GN?

Apologies for the dumb question. My friend owns it but knows less about it than me.

    Cheers,

(He left it out in public last night; it wasn't stolen...)

Might find that the fall knackered the inside of the battery, causing an internal fault, which means death for it

I thought they were just bolted on either side at the back?

    Cool

Or call a Suzuki (GN250) dealer in Wellington that is near you...

They will be able to help you out...

There are a few GN250 riders on KB... Sunhuntin is one..

If it has a helmet lock visibly under the seat put the key in and turn it the other way, should pop seat off.

theres two bolts at the back just a bit further towards the back of the bike than the top mounting bolt for the rear shock absorber....undo those two bolts.

and also undo one of the nuts that hols the top of one of the rear shock absorbers on....so you can take off the seat strap...

then just slide it towards the back of the bike and pull it off

    hope that helps.

think you can access the battery under one of the sidecovers...they just pop off. as for removing the seat, ive wondered that myself! never had to take one off before. not sure if sidecover access would allow for a decent look or not.

tip for the sidecovers after i nearly got hit by a friends one that flicked off his bike on the highway...take them off and drill two small holes on either side. get a zip tie and thread through the holes and around the frame. pull tight and cut off excess. stops them getting stolen as well!

Don't know anything about the seat, but from the sound of it the electrolyte fluid has leaked from the bat. Top it up with water from Repco or SuperCheap.

(Tap water will do but you didn't here that from me)
Speed limits are just a suggestion, like pants.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

    Got the seat off...

Checked the electrics. Nothing obvious wrong. Did the spark plug cap on a screw-driver thing, and yes, there was a good spark.

    So nothing electrical then.

Next we tried a little more cranking, I'm wondering if maybe fuel is blocked.

Then: "clunk crunch" sound from the engine somewhere - and she starts up real nice.

I hop on, and with the clutch in try going through the gears.

Lots of false neutrals, many missed gears and sometimes the dashboard gear-number-light shows nothing. Sometimes I have to let the clutch out a little to engage something, to make it change gear.

And it still makes some noise sometimes.

So now it looks like the fall did something odd in the gearbox. To avoid more damage the bike is now parked in my work garage waiting for a push to WMC on Monday.

I hope this is just about it being the cheapest Suzuki road bike; 'cos I'm hoping for an SV1000S later this month...

    Thanks again.

scuffy still has the occasional missed gear....sometimes it wont engage and means i end up kicking the gear without the clutch engaged [do it before i take time to think to pull it in] and the light on the dash died about a week after purchase, meaning i couldnt get the neutral engaged right.

might pay to get that looked at if its doing it constantly....for sure.
