Not alot. We will whinge and nothing will change? Probably. Don't get me wrong, I agree with what your saying and I have a strong dislike for telescum. But at the end on the day, the only true way to sort telescum out is for the Govt to unbundle the phone lines. Then, we will see some changes. Hopefully with telescum continuing to rape NZ consumers, the unbundling will happen sooner...Originally Posted by sAsLEX

unbundling won't happen any time soon. As long as Telecom continue to blackmail the govt and commissioner, everyone else can go to hell, in their opinion. So what if NZ is falling behind. So what if NZers want faster cheaper internet.. Telecom is investing tons of cash in the economy. If they're broken up, then NZ will loose out.
That's their pitch anyway. So until the govt grows some hairy plums, not a lot will change. Telecom will just keep the govt happy with 'advances in technology' like the limit on broadband released, ever so slightly..
I don't doubt their ability to extract money from the good kiwi public but having worked for them, as a contractor, a lot of their staff are generally overpaid and unproductive and they are happy to throw money at customers to mask a problem rather than solve it.Originally Posted by RantyDave
Finely tuned they are not.

Heard today that telescum are upping broadband speeds by %400 by xmas. And it has nothing to do with the pressure the media etc have been exerting
year right
OK: Tell me why...
the NEXT door neigbour has broadband ... and i cannot!!!
they are another 75m down the road + 20m (inland from road)IE: further from the exchange than me...
and yet they can have broadband and not me....me.me.me, its all about ME
what a ride so far!!!!
If you watched Campbells interview with the Govt dude wrt to the ULL and telecons latest upgrade the day before a govt speech on the matter they are right fucked off with being blackmailed etc and said that things would be changing sometime this year, weather that means ULL or not we will have to wait and see, but from the way he was talking Helen has finally decided to use her balls and stop being bullied by little old telecon.Originally Posted by bugjuice
And look at other ULL countrys like the states AT&T still make a whopping great profit dont they?
This is probably because of Telecom's Predictive Bandwidth Estimation Methodology (PBEM).Originally Posted by ajturbo
Basically, bandwidth availability on broadband decreases as the line quality deteriorates. So, at a certain point you reach the point where Telecom consider that the bandwidth available may not be adequate for the client's requirements. If their estimation is that the bandwidth they can supply will be inadequate , they will not provision a broadband capability. From their point of view it is better customer relations to tell you upfront that they can't do it, rather than putting it in and then having you complain about the speed being slower than dial up.
Of course, the key to this is the estimate of the client's bandwidth requirements. Telecom have automated tools to determine this. What they do is look back at your previous browsing history. They have found that the greatest bandwidth load, by far, is imposed by downloading porn. Heavy downloaders of porn require far more bandwidth than other people. And those who are into gay porn use far more bandwidth than straight porn viewers (no idea at all why this is - I know *nothing* about gay porn, go ask Telecom).
So, in your case, Telecom have assessed the bandwidth requirement of your neighbour, and consider that it is likely to be much less than yours. In other words, the broadband quality in your area is sufficient for your neighbour's requirements, but not for yours. Perhaps your neighbour is a nun? Or a very old lady? Or perhaps , based on the above, there is some other reason why your predicted bandwidth requirement should be very high. I'm sure I couldn't say why.But it seems Telecom know something.![]()
