I kinda errr, um broke me sidestand off the DR, and wanted to get the guys at Heslops to weld it back on. With a car, you disconnect battery leads or something don't you?, what do you do with bikes?.

Just disconnect the battery (both leads). Prolly not necessary on a DR but best to be safe. Stops high frequency spikes entering the system (or summut techy like that)

Na seriously - if you're unsure do it. It's 5 mins work and you'll be 100% sure all is good. I reckon it'd be ok if the earth is close to the weld, but for the peace of mind...

Yer, thanks guys. My DR is old old (82), and is kick start, so no battery, but what about CDi units and stuff?, no worries there?.

to be safe disconnect all electronic devices and batterys, and as posted have earth clamp off welder as close to weld area as possible,

I have had alot of my bikes welded ...... all CDI and nothing has gone bad with them so far....

From what I understand.
If you weld with the battery connected when you have a alternator.
You can fry a diode.
With an older car and a generator you are OK.
But for all the trouble it can cause I would disconnect the battery to be safe.
If you have no battery you should be OK.
But for the sake of disconnecting a plug, I would pull out the plug on the CDI.
Why take the risk.
And put the earth clamp as close to where you are going to weld.
It will stop arcing in bearing etc, which is bad.
For example, if you were to weld at one end of a chain.
And you had the earth clamp at the other end.
Every link would arc and then have a small rough spike at each and every link.
Now if this was in your wheel bearing or engine bearings is a good way of
f*#@ing them the moment they move.

Walked two doors down to Morley Honda today, and spoke to Ian, the manager, and asked how much it would cost to get the stand welded, and he said 12 bottles of Speights, so I rode the bike the huge 8 second trip, and stayed while they welded, now I have a side stand.
