If your really keen..... paint the fairing yourself its cost me about $150 to paint my entire race fairing and is looking pretty mint, not perfect, but definately good for the price...... As for the fairing how and what kind of damage does it have?

How about helping out some other bum students,find out where Auto finishers get trained and ask them if they want to do your bike if you supply the paint,they`d probably be glad of the practice plus it would be supervised by whoever was training them,over here it`s a college course.you might even get them to supply the paint at cost price.Only a suggestion but if you dont ask then you`ll never know.

Thanks for ur replies. RH fairing has a crack al the bottom about 8-9 inches and lots of scratches. Left side is even worse. More then couple of plastic pieces missing and couple of cracks. LH mirror holder is cracked too. Cracked visor (that 1 easily replaceable). Scratches on front wheel guard. So I have to plastic weld first. Hey two smoker did u paint by yourself? I dunno if I should do it as I don’t know shit about painting. The only previous experience is painting the handle bars with spray can. Yeap moko I will keep ur advice in mind too.

painting isnt too hard..... you need to be careful about how much paint you put on. Even if you know this, you will still get runs, but you can sand these out and patch them up....I know I'm looking forward to getting some runs when i do my first paint job.... A rough job can be done with off-the-shelf spray cans, and some sandpaper. If you want a perfect finish, or to touch up an existing coat, I wouldnt do it yourself. Colour matching is very difficult, and the clear coats etc etc are hard. You would need a decent air compressor and a spray gun, along with a good garage / spray booth, and some family/flatmates oblivious to paint smells to to a good job yourself. Check out TS's fairings on the 23rd, which he did himself from off the shelf spray cans He's done a pretty decent job from what I've seen of it so far. However, that is a complete sand down and respray, no need to worry about colour matching, decals, two-tone or anything complicated like that.

the plastic welding is gonna be the most expensive bit.sounds like about $100 worth of repairs needed.-sight unseen.
Id suggest maybee it might be cheaper to buy a second hand fairing half from one of the wreckers.

Dont worry about the scratches, if they can't be sanded out the can be bogged up, the one the crack in it will cost about $50 or so the one with pieces broken off sounds like it will cost big $$$......

my bike is a ZZR250 all black 95. I don’t have to go through the hassle of matching color, just need to sand’em and paint’em black. But before I do anything I have to plastic weld’em (which is a killer). TS what do I need to buy to paint it by myself? It’s definitely helpful to learn this shit.

The other point you may want to keep in mind when considering your options is resale value.

Watch out with which paint you use. Had a nasty reaction can-spaying my old GSXR250. Found out the they were painted with Epoxy paint, this reacted bad with the Enamel paint from the can (crazy cracking and frosting around the sprayed area). Got told afterward that you should never use Enamel on Epoxy. Check with a pro-auto painter before you try.

Plastic welding can be done with a clean soldering iron (getting better at this myself now). Make sure you match with the right plastic rod (I got my last rod from a Pro-plastic welder, but am looking for an other sorce for rods). You can rebuild missing bits if you have something to model it on. Just like any welding, the main difference between a good weld and a bad one is how much sanding and grinding you need to do afterwards This is a lot easier with the plastic

PS: Wreckers will rip you off for replacement fairings. Only use them if the fairing is beyond repair.

You will still need to colour match, cos there is black and black. Gloss black with clear coats, metallic black, matt black, true black, black with some navy to make it look richer etc etc. I would only paint myself if I was stripping down entire panels and repainting (what TS has done). Good points to take note of about paint types too.....

On the inside use a broken bit of hacksaw blade to rough up the plastic around the crack, then use fibreglass to patch it, then finish on the shiny side with bog. Im not expert but its worked on a few of my fairings.
