    Average km's

Another thread got me thinking (it hurt)...
What is the average number of k's ridden in a year? Not just ridden by someone (like Skelstar) who's never off their bike or by someone who leaves it in the gargre except for special occasions (like nobody should). The question goes towards trying to figure out how many k's a bike should/could have done if you were looking to buy it.

Is 80,000km too much for a 10 year old bike? What about 20,000km in a year?
Cages you can average out to about 10-15,000 km a year - it's a random judge of how much wear it's had. Is this the same for a bike?

I was thinking roughly the same.. what about just saying what year and how many k's too..

I don't have an 'average year' really.. my sept 04 bike has nearly 27,000 on it, and that ain't slowing down

An older bike is gonna have more breakdowns than a new one but is it going to be ridden as much?

I reckon 10- 15000 is about right, and thats mostly just weekend riding, with the occasional commute

This would be a much harder call than for a cage since bike owners have them for so many differing reasons....from 'It looks kewl in my gargre' all the way to 'If I don't get at least 100kms in every day of the year, the 'other me' makes a housecall'
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Depends, if the bike is well looked after, then it doesn't matter how many kms you put on it

    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers

No 80,000 is not to much. Sure it is getting on a bit compared to a lot but if it has been looked after add another 50,000 to it and it should need some work like rings and things.Shocks and front forks have done some work by 80K Swing arm bearings and things may need a check but that's all reflected in the price.
Mine is at 73K and was raced when new. Still going great. No smoke or drive problems at all. Never had the tappet cover off.
One front seal is being a pain but I can not see any damage to shaft so will replace it and hope it beds in.
The more K's a bike does in a year the better. They are usually better maintained, IMO.

I only ride my bike on the weekends (if sunny and I'm not out fishing) and I have done 9500k's since late November.

I have never bought a bike with over 20,000k's on it as in my experience they devalue a bit and become harder to sell once you clock up the k's eh. So I try to buy bikes with under 5'000ks on them as I know I put a few k's on them fairly quickly.

I guess I'm about an average rider with 28000 Km since June 04 on the GS1200, and a few more that I haven't counted on the RE5.
    Time to ride
