    GS1200SS--Performance tuning?

    OK ladies and gentlemen,

I'm new to this board and have only just got back into biking in NZ. I have spent the last 25 years in the UK where my last ew bikes have been a Yamaha FJ900, a ZZR1100 and a Honda VFR 750.

I have a GSX1100FJ that is going off the road to get a rebuild so I have just bought a GS1200SS for a bit of fun riding.

What I want to know is where to start modifying this machine for some more power. I have read all I can on this board but have trouble visualising all the information. Its a bit random.

What can I do to this bike to take it to about 130-150 hp. The last few years in the UK bikes were my living, 250,000 miles in 2 years, so all i was interested in was that the thing kept going strong and returned reasonablee fuel ecconomy. Apart from the occasional drag at Santa Pod and the occasional 5 year ban for speeding on the M4 (indicated 180mph on the ZZR), I havent worried too much about performance tuning.

I understand these are detuned "bandit" engines. WHere do I start? Where do I progress to? Where do I go o to get the parts from?

My last foray into improving the performance of a motorbike myself was a RD350 in the mid 70's before going to the UK.

I am pretty much a nov ice when it coms to working on these 4 stroke big bore engines.

    Help me !!!

I dont speed often but sometimes I just have that urge to push myself and my bike to our respective limits. I would like to be able to do this on this bike.

had a mate with one , they spent loades ove time with it on the dyno and the best thing that you can do is get rid of the carbs and put larger on eg from a gsxr1100n or cr 's40-38, or cv , it hade a full system on it and modified air box , couldnt get anthing much more from it , the o/e carbs are just to small

    i owned one.

the gs1200ss is heavily and thoroughly restricted.
early gsxr cams, carbs, CDI and a decent can wake it up a whole lot.

Have a look at this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ad.php?t=27146
it may apply to the SS?
the HP specs for the SS on the net states 100HP and for the bandit 98HP are they detuned?
the GSXR Forum ( http://www.gixxer.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=0 ) under oil cooler has an part interchange list and if my memory is right it mention bandits engines and what GSXR parts will fit.

Fit an after market can, open the airbow with 50 mm hole drilled in the top. Bandits have bigger carbs so you could fit a rejetted set of those or just stick with standard.
With these mods, my last Bandit made 111 hp at the wheel. About 125 - 130 at the crank.
    Anymore will require cams, etc.
    Speed doesn't kill people.

    Thanks for the reply.
These are all good pieces of advice and I am noting them all.
I may already have a line on a set of GSXR cams.
I think I will prowl the scrappies looking for some larger carbs.

Working on building a water injection unit. Got the pump and jets. Now to build it.

Have my mates in UK looking for some lighter wheels. Wont increase HP but will aid handing, deceleration and acceleration due to lower inertial mass.

I had a thought over the weekend (supprised myself). If I cant immediately increase the HP then at least I can attempt to lower the weight of the machine and make better use of what HP I have.

The GS1200SS uses the Bandit power plant. The HP is similar to the Bandit, but the small difference is due to airflow and exhaust as others have already mentioned.

I have read of one enthusiast who tried tuning his GS1200SS for the track, and fitted cams, carbs etc from a GSXR100 with quite incrtedible results. If I can locate the web site, I'll post it on here for you.

Ok, I found it. Have a look in the discussion group on Bikez.com. You'll need to read through quite a bit of shit to find it all.
