At the opening round of the 2006 MotoGP series we saw Dani Pedrosa come past both Marco Melandri and Nicky Hayden, without much effort, to take second place in his first MotoGP race ever. Less weight equals more acceleration, slower fuel consumption and longer tire life. As we look forward to the adoption in 2007 of smaller engines and smaller fuel tanks, here are some numbers worth considering:

Pedrosa: 104 lb, 5'2"
Elias: 121 lb, 5'4"
Melandri: 128 lb, 5'6"
Stoner: 128 lb 5'7"
Capirossi: 130 lb, 5'4"
Rossi: 130 lb, 5'11"
Hayden: 150 lb, 5'8"
Gibernau: 154 lb, 5'9"

Yeah that's pretty freaky aye. Imagine if Honda chopped 50lbs out of their next 'Blade (any capacity). It would instantly monster the rest, despite having the most gutless engine.

Ofcourse there's the argument that more weight means more stable, but ona track, and at this level, when suspension set up is near perfect, that's totally redundant.

Pedrosa weighs about what the average Singaporean girl does. Comparing to NZ chicks is just silly.

Makes interesting reading. Though of course Rossi is a freak and can ride the wheels off anything as he's proved, so it will take more than a weight advantage for the little guys. But if they learn to ride as well as the more experienced, it will make for great racing! Bring them on and let the games begin, I say! The race was good viewing but... Oops, better not spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet...

Being a little fella (once!) I used to laugh at the lumbering fools who modified their bikes to go faster - duh,my bike was way faster than theirs stock! Why put your bike on a weight reduction program,the answer is kinda obvious,but they can't see it.Motorcycle racers have traditionaly been short,even the Yanks.

some how i doubt a honda would monstr a kawa or suzi anytime soon...despite massive weight loss...

Their MotoGP engine probably does 'monstr' everyone elses. When you have more than enough power to spin tyres at any speed, maximum output seems to matter less than rider headspace and a good team. Just look at Ducati coming 3rd and 4th, whose bike would be down on on power compared to a Honda (Or Yam) engine or Edwards coming 9th while team mate Rossi comes first.

But off the racetrack, yeah, bragging rights do not fall to Honda.

While weight plays a significant part in all motorsports, reliability is of equal importance. So far in MotoGP, Suzuki appears to have a cronic points phobia. Someone should tell them they actually need to get their shitters over the finish line to be in the game.

Team Rizla must have been quite pleased to see John Hopkins kicking the snot out of his Suzuki when it shit itself. They say that the technology found in MotoGP bikes often makes it's way down to the production line. This appears very true in Suzuki's case.

Honda made the highest output per litre engine for any production car in the s2000. Made more horsies than my 300zx ever did! That aside, we're all obviously far too tall and far too fat to compete. Bugger. Guess we best go and throw beer bottles then!!

Edit, maybe if I deliberately malnutrition my child, and have the endocrine glands (responsible for growth hormone) surgically retarded, then my kids could be in with a chance... Oh, and no pies!!

The funny thing was seeing him collapse to the ground after the first couple of kicks. He must have his foot!!!!
I recorded it last night and went to bed. Watched the 125 & 250 races, then after around 7 laps of the GP the tape ended. I want a DVD recorder!!!

Yep it sure is good being a small guy. I'm the same size as Noriyuki Haga and it doesn't hurt my bike's performance at all.

The 'Hopper' sure looked pissed on Saturday night, and I don't think that Chris Vermuilin was too happy either. I've been a Suzuki fan since I started riding, but I can't understand how their MotoGP bike is so slow when they produce the GSXR series.

I was under the impresion that the kawasakis are the HP kings of motogp...they just havn't figured out how to use it yet or find tyres and traction for it [and possibly riders to use it well too]

I figure Honda have the most power because they have the most cylinders, (I think it is the only V5..?) so that means the most revs and therefor the most power.

And they are willing to chuck limitless amounts of money at stuff.

When 800cc comes in, I am hoping for a V3 oval piston Honda. Just to make shit crazy.

I think the Ducs are the most powerful. But none of them are developing all the power they're capable of. Wait till the 800's come out, I'll wager they'll be within 10hp of the 990's if not the same.
Pedrosa may weigh less than a wet fart, but he couldn't quite muscle the bike around to the end. Could he?
