Has anyone ever crated their bike?

HI KBer's, I was in NZ a couple years ago, and thought what a great place for a ride (if the rain could hold off LOL). So i was hoping to hear if anyone has had any experience in crating their bike and shipping between Australia and NZ? Any advice would be appreciated, ty.

Best bet is to ask the U-Sissies riders as they OFTEN crate their bikes OS for a ride.

If your bike is pretty modern, you might score a factory crate for free with a bit of asking.

I know someone who organises this sort of thing but only in batches, you could try

If you go it alone make sure you understand Carnets etc.

when I bought my latest bike I was offered the crate, normally they throw the crates out for scrap, you should be able to get one with out much effort.
As they don,t return them to Japan.

Good idea but you would have to be prepared to partially disassemble the bike (used to be wheels & handlebars in the old days) & do a ‘pre-delivery’ on it when you got there.

Yeah. Last May I crated my ST along with 3 other bikes and we shipped them to Brisbane from Napier with a co. called Conroys. Did 5,000 kays getting to NQ and back. (great stuff)

The 'go' is to get hold of Harley D crates from a dealer. We paid $25 ea. They are steel and well made. (Better than the bikes they initially carried ???) Tied down each end they all travelled fine

We used the frames over the bikes and braced them, but not the covers, so that customs and MAF could inspect as reqd.

Conroys arranged for the inspections etc and we only took about 45 mins to do our bit of paper work at Caboolture and we were off. In beautiful sunshine - in July..........

Cost of that was around $1,200 (not incl insurance)
