Nana was pleased that everyone (with maybe one exception) behaved sensibly, and got home safely!

The absence of the 300kph Litre Maniac Club was not missed, and this has confirmed my suspicion that rides should for safety be grouped by bike size/power.

Without the 600+ bikes to "egg people on" it was very noticeable that the 250 riders were quite comfortable at sensible speeds (between legal limit and licence losing). I noticed that the only times when people seemed to want to get carried away were when the 600 sprotsbike that was along went by at highish speed. He was actually behaving well , but just the "Ohh, look at him go, gee I wish I could go that fast" factor seemed to bring on less cautious riding for a bit. That, and a couple of other things not appropriate to mention here have made me reconsider my thinking about the wisdom of capacity restrictions for the inexperienced.

I do not know if it was the absence of big sprotsbikes (I think it was) but it was also very noticeable that riders were being quite slow and cautious in the corners. I saw nothing that would cause Nana alarm. There were a few instances where inexperience got people into difficulties, but they all emerged safely , albeit a bit shaken. I suspect that if there had been a contingent of bike sprotsbikes the "must keep up factor" would have meant that those instances would have turned into crashs.

As it was , everybody rode within their own limits and I think felt comfortable doing so. Which was fortunate in a way for me, since poor Ratty was well outclassed amongst all the 4 cylinders with twice his horsepower. But the slow pace in the twisty bits meant that if I got left behind on the straight bits I could catch it up on the corners without having to exceed Nana's immensely cautious safety margins.

Pity about the rain but I think it was the right decision, there were learners along and tackling tricky roads in the wet could have been unwise.

After the ride broke up at Kaucop, I went off on a wee exploration of my own to Mosquito Bay. No I'd never heard of it either, and wouldn't know now what it was called if there had not been a sign board. Disappointing but, 70km of (quite interesting) seal, 10km of gravel (bad gravel at that, I prefer less loose metal , 16 inch front wheel doesn't deal well with that) , just to finish up in a carpark. I hate it when that happens. "Walking track to beach". Bah, humbug.

Thank you Mr Swanny for organising it, well done all who participated , safe enjoyable riding.

Did you end up out at South Head Ixion?
Your rain comment is valid but im in the mind frame that if you out riding chance's are that the wet stuff will fall at some stage this time of the year so best deal with it, dont get spooked, RIC should find a place ( if RIC see's the black clouds ) and stop, not often the rain just appears out of nowhere. In my earlier post, the rain i spoke about, i saw it 10kms out and it was where i was going, made the decision that i will stop in Paparoa. Which i did, albeit the last 5 kms were at 40-50 kph, but i was laughing and thinking 'what the fuck are we doing' ?......... point is, adjust to the conditions, if it looks set in, yeah can it and go home, but a passing shower?...its going to get ya sometime, might as well get use that condition too......

Well, I thought I was on the way to South Head. But when i got to the end of the road the sign board said Mosquito bay. So, I dunno.

For me, I'd happily have continued in the rain . About the first time ever I think I've turned back because of rain. But , having said that (a) I had waterproofs or leather and not everyone did, those in jeans were pretty wet and cold; and (b) it's a bit different when you are making the call on behalf of other people, some of whom were inexperienced. If the call had been to continue , and an inexperienced rider had crashed in poor visibility, I imagine that there would have been plenty quick to condemn the decision ('twas not my call BTW, I just went along with it) .

Point taken, maybe some of those riders should attend the BRONZE Ride Right Ride Safe day at Whenuapai airbase on the 30th.......last thing any of us want is broken bikes/people for the want of $45.........saw something yesterday that had me gob smacked, passing lane at Johnson's hill (where tunnel is being formed) two lanes of stopped traffic, but didnt worry the scooter club, passing over the double yellow's on a left hander with passing lanes being used north bound......:slap: very very close, at least Triumph rider went up the inside of us, now you tell me who had more brain cells/experience/skill ?

THOSE YELLOWs ARE ACTUALLY QUITE WIDE AND THERE IS USUALLY ALOT OF ROOM, YOU CAN'T GO UP THE INSIDE THE WHOLE WAY AS THE MEDIAN WILL FORCE YOU INTO CARS AT SOME POINTS. AND ALSO PASSING ON THE LEFT IN THOSE SITUATIONS WHERE TRAFFIC IS MOVING A BIT CAN BE BAD WHEN THEY SWERVE TO THE LEFT BECAUSE THEY ASSUME YOU ARE PASSING ON THE RIGHT.

All cars were stopped and i for one would never underpass traffic like that because fear of a vehicle moving to the left, yes you are right on that point, but if you could have seen this twat with his little flag on the top of his whippy flagpole, very unsteady,in the passing lane of oncoming traffic doing 100+km. He could not see what was coming being a downhill lefthander....guess he got home safely......... he's still a wanker....he looked like and rode like one for the 5 mins that i saw him.

Did any one see my accident? Could you please give me a PM thanks.
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

Yes, it was quite interesting to observe the different group dynamic after being on many KB rides. Going from Kaukop to Wellsford I found the pace pretty good, 10 - 20kmp/h under what I would usually do but comfortable and enjoyable.

I'll definitely work on organising another 250cc ride but limit it to Medium Pace (100kmp/h - 130kmp/h). This seemed to be the average and most people were comfortable with it - the majority of the group seemed to stick togeather as well. Always a good thing as it means less stops.

I had drawn up maps however after seeing the turnout and the broad range of skills and engine capacities it would of been a waste of time.

If anyone wants to do the route by themselves sometime PM me and I'll send you a copy of the map.

I think it was a wise decision, the route from that point on was fairly tricky but not impossible for a newbie to navigate. The rain would of increased the chances of an accident by 60%.

Shit happens. Bummer though as the "good part" was after Wellsford.

A lot of those 250 riders would gladly swap for a 600 or 1000 Ixion.
    Your post reeks of jealousy.

Well, I have two 750s to back up little Ratty, so I do not think jealousy is relevant. And doubtless most 250 riders would gladly swap. The point is that many 250 riders would not be wise to swap. And the "my penis is bigger" bragging that seems, sadly, to be too often a part of the sprotsbike world, tempts the inexperienced into situations which they have not the experience to deal with. Freed from the bragadaccio of the litre bikes they can concentrate on riding , and hopefully mature into long term motorcyclists.

(And I must also point out that there are many riders of large capacity machines that give of their time and trouble to help new riders, and impart to them good and cautious safe riding practices. Power be to them, what goes round comes round). Perhaps Mr Sixpackback we will see you at the next newbie ride, helping to show new riders how to ride both fast and sensibly ? Messrs Weasel and gremlin will I am sure accept all such offers of help. But tution in wheelies will not be required. )

To be honest, I have more fun on my 250 (or 150's) than any 600 etc... I wouldn't mind one end of this year but a 250 is enough bike for me and probably will be for a very long time. And they hold their own in the twisties anyway
