Hibernating my bike ? Things I should know,...

Hi all,

I tried to search the forums before posting this, but didn't really know what to search for...

I'm going on a working / holiday trip overseas for 3 months soon, and I was wondering what if anything I should do to ensure that my 91 GSXR400 still goes when I come back...

I figure unplugging the battery is a start, maybe removing the petrol (or using it up, being more fun), and keeping it in covered in a garage, but beyond that i'm out of ideas. I've left it for 3 weeks once and it was a real beatch to get started after that,...

Any help your collective gargantuan biking knowledge could add would be extremely appreciated ! thanks guys and gals

I have heard in many places it is a good idea to remove the spark plugs and put a table spoon of oil down each of the cylinders. After this is done leave the spark plugs out and spin the motor a few times on the starter to make sure the oil is spread. Also helps to stop the thieves as well lol.

If you have stands try and elevate the bike of the ground or get a friend to move the bike while you are away to stop uneven tyres (Sorry cant remember the full reason to do this).

If you have a battery charger, charge the battery before you go but don’t leave it going for obvious reasons.

Putting fresh oil I would think would help as it removes all the impurities that builds up over time.

That’s about all I can remember.

Don’t know what my bike is going to be like "when" I get it back from the shop, has been 7 weeks now since its been in there - hope they have given the engine a run at least.

According to my manual it states:

1. Supply enough fuel in the fuel tank (I presume to prevent rusting/corehsion
2. Drain all fuel from the carburetor(s)
3. Remove the battery from the motorcycle.

Not the best of help.

You could park it at my place
Coz I'm a nice guy I'd even fire it up and "Rotate" the tyres for you

Leave it with a friend you trust who can ride it once a week or at least start it up.

Or if you are not keen on doing that, combine what swanny and danb say and go from there.

Best place to hibernate the bike is at your usual work parking place through the day, and at you home at night. This method guarantees the bike will be ready at a moments notice on those fine winter days for long rides...

3 months? i wouldn't worry about it. i've seen bikes on the floor at m/c shops for longer than that.
