First I'll have to get a bike as the SY is not road legal anymore and wont be for the next six months. I have a ZZR 600 thats registered and warranted but have to fix the head and put it back together.

Dont get that one either unless it refers to the TC.
I used to get shit back in the 80's 'rude X' & 'ugley duckling' but once I beat a mate over to Akaora him riding a GS1100g I gained a little respect... er and the name 'dangerous'

Blue in colour. Same colour as the Aus Two Wheels '78 "bike of the year" shared with a dohc CB750K IIRC. Will confirm exact model once I have next week and get a chance to have a gander at the frame and engine numbers:

    1978 CX500
    - Frame: CX500-2000001
    - Engine: CX500E-2000001
    1979 CX500
    - Frame: CX500-2100001
    - Engine: CX500E-2100006
    1979 CX500C
    - Frame: PC01-2000017
    - Engine: PC01E-2000017
    1979 CX500D
    - Frame: PC01-4000005
    - Engine: PC01E-4000005
    1980 CX500C
    - Frame: PC01-2100018
    - Engine: PC01E-2100019
    1980 CX500D
    - Frame: PC01-4100002
    - Engine: PC01E-4100003
    1981 CX500C
    - Frame: JH2PC0103BM200006
    - Engine: PC01E-2200006
    1981 CX500D
    - Frame: JH2PC0113BM200001
    - Engine: PC01E-4200011
    1982 CX500C
    - Frame: JH2PC0109CM300001
    - Engine: PC01E-2300001
    1982 CX500TC
    - Frame: JH2PC0307CM000017
    - Engine: PC03E-2001091

It's registered as a 79, has original style comstars with plastic covers over the rivets. Has the '78 style radiator though- "Z" model I believe honey cone type instead of straight plastic grill, no alloy surround. Oh and a single front disk.

Already putty together a list of things I'm going to do to it It'll never be the same again

Hmmm Now wouldn't a black gloss tank, gold pin stripping with little gold skull and cross bones representing "kills" be naff?

Interesting comment about the Euro re camchain. Do you think retrofitting the old style semi automatic tensioner would have been the way to go?

Yip the auto tensioning system was shit and what gave Honda the bad rep.
The problem I found is the tensioner kept the chain too tight and more importantly it never used the full life of the chauin up, the tensioner wouldn't adjust all the way.

The earlier system was awesome the 1st CX I had ended up with over 100,000k on it and still had many k's left.

Having said that the Turbo never showed any signs of wearing out so perhaps the cam chain problem had been finally sorted, then again the TC was built bloody strong.

Took the thing for a ride today. I'd forgotten how easy they rev and smooth they actually are to ride. Put lower/narrower bars on, as the current owner had higher/wider bars on it to heave the chair about. Gives me a much more comfortable riding stance. The two into one is loud enough, but not too loud that it would be intrusive on long rides. First thing on my list of things to do is put on a decent set of tires. After that who knows.... Got a gent interested in the GSX750EX, so it'll leave a space for the CX if she gets sold.

Dangerous what engine "work" did you have done on your "B"?

Now that I think about it I've got a couple of 1" long damper rod springs, found while hunting for a suitable foot peg, I'm going to put in the front forks to stiffen them up a bit.

When they first came out here(dont know if the Kiwi market avoided the early problem bikes)they were a disaster and it looked as if Honda had dropped a massive brick.Reports in the press of all kinds of major engine problems cropping up on nearly new bikes, this when they were still reeling from the various camchain problems on other models as well.To their credit Honda sorted out a pretty desperate situation and ironically something known as a mechanical time-bomb gained a reputation for longevity.A common joke at the time was "knock knock" "who`s there?" "CX500".
They sold thousands of the things here,I think it was BIKE who nicknamed them the Plastic Maggot,Flying Pig was another one.Where are they? Here they were the couriers bike of choice and that`s where most of them ended up,being thrashed to death by throttle happy nutters, even with this treatment they were known for going round the clock and 100,000 miles was the norm.VT500 was less popular as by then the general public were more into sportsbikes but another good machine and another courier favourite, likewise the 600 and 650 Reveres that continued the line, good machines all if you`re not bothered about image and just want dependable transport.

Shit now ya asking me to think back a long way.
Ok a mate owned the bike when I 1st meet him it had 6000k on it, now two weeks after he brought it he T boned a cage and the bike was writen off.
Some old bugger brought it from the ins Co and re built it, he only put 200k on it and then I brought it, but what had happened was the oil pump had een cracked in the acco.
This meant the oil light was on at idle and me being a youngen figgered well my triumph cars do that just like the ingnition lights do... so she'll be right.
2000k later and the noise was a bit much, a strip down reveled that it was well fucked inside.

So to answeer ya Q, bored out new ground cam etc bigger carbs and a home built pipe (turbo flow resionators) altho it did loose some top end wit these.
With the use of the heavest fork oil I could get and 3 10c pieces in each fork that bike hauled some decent arse for me for over 10yrs... and I still see it getting around, I sold it as original, hence why the EFE fairing still prosides in the garage
    cheers DD
