Today I thought I would go to Mount Manganui for lunch since it was mint weather etc, jumped on the bike and decided for a 'follow my nose' approach through roads that I've never been down and see what happened. I went into town and took the NW port offramp. went right and followed the road through the bays (mission bay etc) hoping (hoping!) that I could just follow the roads pretty much along the coastline all the way to Thames.

well I found out that South East Auckland is a really nice place and has gorgeous roads etc (even if it is suburbia) and found some nice beaches/bays/inlets etc. I figured out that wouldnt work too well after a while so I headed back inland for a bit and found myself back on SH1 about 10mins down the road from where I got off NW (took me an hour to get there). I was hardly amused, anyway I went down there for a while and took a left at papakura and basically just found roads (there isnt that many) to take me in the general direction I wanted to go. It was an absolutly beatifull day for a ride, I stopped at kaiua (sp?) for a beer then decided I didnt want to go to the MT after all and headed down a bit then up to hunua and into cleavdon/beachlands etc. once again really mint roads + weather + other bikes and so on.

ANYWAY. im going somewhere with this, around cleavdon I had a neat idea for a website; tripper.com*. Simply put its a mapping website that has the ability for users to 'draw' their route with a mouse and save it so it can be displayed to other people. So basically, Mr Smith can say to his buddies:

Hey guys! I found this awesome road thats a minter, check it out!

and it will load up the appropriate map and the people watching it see the little dot moving accross the map.
also a nice little feature will be signposts. the map maker can put little signposts or speechbubbles on certain points on the route to say things like 'good stop to go for a leak here' or 'I nearly lost it on this corner be careful'

the other use is for people organising rides.

like the idea, also you should put up a 'ride rating' so people can say how good they think it was.

Should talk to buggy because he has the motorcyclists mapbook of NZ which shows the really nice roads in it (so you can have a decent database when you start... infact i think they've got most of it covered already... but it will give you an idea of the rides most people are doing.

Cheers for the thoughts guys. I'll probably see buggy closer to go-date as I'm still in planning. I WANT to make it in a apache/mysql/php server but might have to do a .net project so I can have a more direct hand in the development itself.

I'f anyone has had any experience with image manipulation with database input on either a .php/apache based or .asp/.net/IIS server then post your thoughts

Sounds like a great idea.. Though I'd suggest going with your basic plan.. with the additional concepts in the back of you mind... Thus you wont get lost in the scope of the project and you can add to it as it grows.

plan is to get a working exe version then re-write it in .net it to make it a web application.

heres a shot of the current version

currently allows you to load custom maps (Ie ones downloaded and saved or scanned) and draw the route. it is recording it (Ie the lines) into a database also.

I draw a little route by dragging the mouse over the map
notice its only 'recording' when the box up the top right is green
then I save it and clear it and replay it
I adjust the speed up a bit since it was going too slow.

flash + xml + xsl with a php / mysql backend would be the very best/easy way to present it - because .net is a dirty whore of a bitch at least with flash / xml it would be easily cross platform low overhead and still retain development potential.

but this is free, and for people like us - I have no problem with free stuff, I am sure there is something already out there - but constant development and feature addition makes things more interesting for end users.

Its on the same princible as all software, there is always a top dog - with many puppies trying to knock it off the top.
