    Every motor is soooooo different
I have had two stroke motors like tiny ones on brush cutter that was so temperamental it would only run on fresh 96. Yet the Stihl chainsaw fires up no troubles on 91 that's been sitting round a while.
Four strokers I have never experienced any fuel problems. But the race quad certainly has some punch with avgas. Can only use avgas now I have high comp piston in it.

My old Ford 10 would sit around for so long that the fuel would go off and smell like turps,it would feel greasy and not evaporate. It was 6 volt and couldn't jump it,so I'd hand crank it and she'd fire up no worries, run for a few minutes on 3 cyl until the sticky valve came free, then I'd drive off.

If my bikes sit for more than 3 or 4 weeks I have to drain the carbs and run fresh from the tank through before they start.Usualy I run the bowls dry before I put them away, same as the mower, but sometimes forget.Race fuel will start 6mths later without draining the carbs.

Sorry,I just made all that up because I'm a mechanic....can't help it,I was born that way....

    where

Where do i get race fuel from?
i am having problems with diesel at the moment, the ute has been suffering with a bad dose from BP, gull has the best diesel around ( so the mechanic told me )
and when storeing fuel and life expectancy, how long has it been sitting in the fuel tanks at the station? mixing with older fuels?
    diesel lasts ages in storage.
maybe these new fuels are more of a pain in the ass. but it smells better???????

I think that when we refer to racegas, its normally 108 (or 118??) octane petroleum... Not diesel.
Cant say i've heard of race diesel

Racegas that you can buy at the pump is 98. Some retailers have 100 octane avgas (which sometimes you can be required to show a race licence for).

I have a sneaking suspicion that race gas won't do too much for your diesel son. Don't suppose your mechanic works at Gull by any chance?

    Cool

On both occassions that my bike has sat for 8 weeks.... the petrol was fine.

1st occassion - I filled up the tank to the top and started her up weekly. I did this cos I knew that I wasn't going to riding her for that length of time. I never had a problem at all.

2nd occassion - The tank was damn near empty (from my accident), but fired her up weekly. Only on one occassion did she stumble over starting.. so I waited 10 minutes and tried again... she fired up straight away. So I guess I had flooded her... first time to ever do that - was also getting a tad worried that the battery was going to go flat as well. As soon as I was able to (after 7 weeks) I took her to the BP garage and refilled up her belly to the top. Just to clear out the fuel as the tank was almost empty.

So all I can suggest that if you are going to leave a bike sitting for up to at least 2 months then fill up the tank to the top and start her up at least once a week for a few minutes.

Oh and my car, well it sat for at least 7 or 8 weeks (including the 5 weeks that I was unable to drive her) and she started up no sweat...
Mind you she is used to sitting out on the driveway for weeks on end not going anywhere..

    lol lets have a fight

Its this line mate "Where do i get race fuel from?
i am having problems with diesel at the moment, the ute has been suffering with a bad dose from BP, gull has the best diesel around ( so the mechanic told me )" That really does suggest you want to put Racegas in your Diesel powered ute
    ...

This highlights the differences between saying something in RL and writing it. Had you have said that, it would be obvious you were talking of something completely different. Since it is written there is no vocal tones, pauses or any intonation of any sort.

I get my race fuel (avgas) from the local BP. They have it out back, also one motorcycle dealer has it or apparently you can go to the aerodrome and get it even cheaper. But by the time I drive all the way out there I believe it'd cost more than I am saving.
BUT................ last month I bought some avgas at Ruapuna Raceway, and shit a brick it was $2.25/litre!!!!!!!!!!! Far out! The BP sells it here for $1.80/litre. Only they had run out the night I was heading to Chch. That is a difference of $9 for 20 litres!! Think I am gonna take some drums of avgas out to Ruapuna next time and sell for $2/litre. Help my racing funds,

I guess it pays to shop around. I now know where not to buy avgas!

'Race gas' is just Av gas that has passed its due by date. I think there is also a minimum octane rating before it cannot be sold for aviation use, over time this decreases. If you know someone with a fuel card for the aero club they are a good friend in deed, you get the good stuff that way.

Dang, I remember racing at ruapuna about a year ago and it was $1.45

Is it caltex or challenge just north of the waimak on the old main north road, They sell 'race gas' at the pump.

Haven't seen 98 at the pumps for a while, have they stocked up in CHCH with it yet? Haven't seen anywhere in dunners with it.

Apparently there is somewhere else in Chch. I know that the service station here just goes out to the local airfield to get it's avgas
As fresh as the stuff that goes in the planes like.
I think BPs are the most common servo with 98 octane
