Used Japanese Import

Can anyone tell how to go about importing a used bike from Japan.
Are there reputable agents out there anyone knows of?

If you look at emoto.co.nz the say they can import specific bikes for you.

Check with Kerry at Motohaus. He and his offsider (also a Kerry) regularly bring in bikes from Japan. Lean on them a little (or a lot) and you could get a good deal.
I bought a mint Triumph Speed Four with 4700ks on the clock from them last October for $8,000. Up to 16,500Ks now and the bike has given me no trouble whatsoever (......touches nearest piece of wood), the only expenses so far have been for accessories and regular servicing and tyres.
Highly recommended.

i dont know what i am talking about so tell me if i am wrong - but dont you need to be carefull about buying bikes second hand from japan as if they were sold to the japanse market - they were most likely restricted?

Yes it would pay to check if the model your after is restricted and to make sure that unrestricting it wont cost you a small fortune. Otherwise go for it

Half the bikes you buy at dealers are imports anyways, and its only the little biddy ones (400 cc) that are all restricted. derestricting is less than 500 bucks, (and that is inflated)
Talk to Holeshot in Auckland, they do some bloody good deals, and have people in Japan. Damn good guys too.

The restricted bikes are those that have been manufactured in Japan for the Japanese market. And you can't tell by the model. Just because it is made in Japan and it is a used bike out of Japan, doesn't mean it is restricted. They have a way of legally selling unrestricted Japanese bikes on the domestic market (buy me a saki and I'll tell you how). For example, you can get a resticted CBR1000RR and a non restricted CBR1000RR. It's pretty easy to tell which ones, any reputable importer will disclose this fact. Obviously, this restriction issue only applies to Japanese bikes.

Forget the propaganda, there is no such thing as a restricted European bike (Ducati, Aprilia, MV, MZ, Guzzi etc.) out of Japan.

can you get hold of 33bhp restricted bikes (e.g honda RVF400?) Only reason is we are due over from uk alter this year, my girlfriend has a licence power limit of 33bhp here (thanks to the EU), and will be restricted to the same until she does another test in NZ.
i'd like to sort her a restricted bike, then be able to derestrict it just so we don't have to lsit 're take test' to the list of things to do on arrival.

Check with www.LTSA.govt.nz Re. your GF's lisence restrictions so you don't get caught out. The NZ equivalent is 250cc on a restricted lisence.
