" Life is not a rehearsal, it's as happy or miserable as you want to make it"
I took my bike in for a warrant this morning and was sitting outside a cafe waiting. Counted 23 cops go past in 20 mins. I couldn't believe it. Also saw 5 cages get pulled over, couldn't tell what they'd done wrong.
Must have been quota day!
Idnz, I see up to 20 cop cars parked up at ohakea weighbridge all the time. And they're not stopping trucks either. What the hells going on in that building anyway? Seems bloody suspicious to me. I'm picking the cops are all inside swigging brandys and watching blue movies.
Jeeeeez......how many different types of "police units" do you guys have over there?
Laser's catching bikers head on! We don't have that over here........yet?
Not possible for the laser to lock onto the bike and take a true reading of your speed, (too many curves) and it would be hard to prove in court. A different story if locked onto your bikes number plate. So how come you guys get tickets off the plod with laser's reading the front?
In the beginning, there was nothing. Then the Lord said: "Let there be light"...
and there was still fuck all, but at least you could see it!....
I've always been curious on the accuracy of laser readings off bikes especially with other traffic around??Originally Posted by ogr1

Oh yes they can. I've seen it done at 230+ km/h. The headlight is a great laser reflector.Originally Posted by ogr1
The real accuracy issue is whether the cop is actually getting a reading off the bike or something else at long range.
Speed doesn't kill people.

There seem to be a lot of rumours out there just how effective or otherwise lasers are against bikes.Originally Posted by raster
I used one off duty a while back to check my and a few others speedos for accuracy. As far as getting locks, it was quite a bit more difficult than a car or truck for obvious reasons but it did work nonetheless - the bike just needed to be a lot closer to the laser.
The beam is very narrow (compared to a radar beam) and the allegations that the speed could be from another vehicle doesn't hold water either. If you actually managed to "split" the beam between two vehicles (which would be very difficult), the laser simply wouldn't lock. That's because it has to do several computations/analyses with the returning beam (like 50 times per second or something) and unless it's satisfied the beam could be from one target only, it won't lock.
Moral: firstly, if you are caught by a laser on a bike you must have been very close and obviously not "looking out for trouble" - both cops and grit will catch you out! Secondly, if you have a laser detector and it scores a hit, chances are you are buggered unless your reaction time including braking time can be measured in milliseconds!!
The tread goes around that far for a reason...
number33 - yeah true, theres always a heap there. Just went past and counted 5. The only reason what I saw yesterday suprised me was because it was in town, in front of where I was sitting, and the number of people they pulled over.
I've been stopped numerous times between here and wanganui (gf), a trip I do twice a week. Every time it has been for no reason at all, either wanted to do a license/reg/warrant check or just have a chat it seems.

Yes it does, at long range it's possible for normal movement by the operator to get a reading off a vehicle alongside or just behind (but in view). It's been proven in the US where they care about these things and lawyers are willing to have a go.

3 cops were lurking on the footpath in the middle of Sanson and walking out fast into the middle of the main road and flagging down motorists. I saw them way ahead but made a big hollywood of having to suddenly stop urgently by locking up the rear and shuddering the bike as if they were causing me to nearly crash. I also leant forward like I was nearly flying over the handlebars. Hopefully that makes them feel guilty, then they become putty in your hands. These cops were cool and smiling. I even took off my helmet and had a yarn. Bike's rego'd but they weren't looking too hard. More interested in the bike. Didn't want to see my license but I'm searching my leather jacket for something to do anyway. Sunny day, quiet and bugger all traffic. Warrant sticker wasn't even an issue but there's one behind the plate covered in grime if anyone wants to check it. Even waved goodbye when I eventually rode off. Fuck did I actually do that. Better take up flower arranging or something. They changed my mind about traffic cops for a few weeks but sadly it didn't last. Too many bad apples.Originally Posted by ldnz

Its the regions highway patrol base. When they aren't out annoying the public they like to have lots of meetings to discuss new ways of annoying said public. Next time you see them there you should drop in for a doughnut.Originally Posted by number33
