    So where were they..?

Actually when I got pulled (in my younger days) for doing 104 (and decelerating, according to the ever accurate lasers they use) on Quay Street (50 zone), and officer said pretty much exactly that.

While the wide-eyed, sharp breathing, narrow-minded psycho one of the group was standing right in my face pulling out such analytical fucking revelations such as: "You weren't racing there were ya mate?", when there wasn't a car going either way for a good half a kilometre...

on of the good ones quietly and calmly assessed the situation with an open mind, noting such things as:
    -2 lanes wide each way
    -divider in the middle
-no parked cars to obscure my vision
-no moving cars on the road
    -no foot traffic
    -dry surface
-perfect visibility (although not to 421m from where they locked me)

He was discussing it with his mates and said, quote: "Yeah, well, it wasn't really dangerous was it..."

But maybe I looked too rich or something having just come from a 13 hour shift of whatever shit labouring job I was doing at the time, 'cos he still proceeded to hand me a piece of paper with my ass on it which ended up being a $830 fine to pay.

(Insert usual argument about breaking the law, knowing it, but it still not fitting in with a proper picture of justice here...chur)

The problem with some of these threads - is that they are trying to apply logic to the enforcement of traffic laws. Don't even bother because it has nothing to do with logic and as a consequence, nothing to do with safety either. It is just that they are being promoted as being for 'safety reasons'.

As the billboard says; "Yeah, right".

It is in the main, a rort that has been propogated for far too long and will be with us for some time yet........... Because we are suckers who (generally) just 'take it on the chin'. Those that rack up $10,000 or so fines and don't pay up will have their slate wiped clean as it falls in to the 'too hard basket'. And why not - there are plenty more fish (suckers) in the sea.
It is more about running a business than law enforcement.

    Gosh I feel better already.

quite true, logic often plays a small part. Speaking as one who recently got screwed for speeding while passing a car on a straight road with no oncoming traffic

Yeah, the Perleece regard it as 'logical' to NOT attend minor crimes - so if that logic is extended, one must assume they regard non-threatening speed to be not a minor crime. Of course it is not about the money.
    Yeah. right again.

Actually old chap, I've had a 'bad day at work' and supping a few red wines, hence I'm a little slow (according to you).

Well pretty soon we won't be able to afford fuel so IONs won't be a problem. In the mean time I'll exercise my pommy cultural right by whining incessantly about both.

Not so mate. All the OMCG types will be hooning up and down on bad ass Raleigh Choppers and you'll have to pull em on your ol' sturdy push iron. Job will be easier, less places to conceal weapons and contraband on a chopper you know.

But when the top of your red-bands get caught between the front sprocket and the chain it's a pretty real risk....

Of course I would have a chopper with banana seat, sissy-bar and T-bar shifter... kewl or what?
