I thought Suzuki restricted the busa to 186 mph ( 297 kmh)?

They are restricted to just under 300 Kays which is easily removed.
The busa was built to do 200MPH off the factory floor. Though it has been achieved in ideal conditions, prior to restrictions being put in place in the later models, it is not a thing you can really achieve on the street or on any day. The Busa was squarely aimed at Hondas blackbird though Honda have never really truly retaliated. The ZX12R was Kawasaki's answer and with more HP and lighter weight It should have been a winner but it didn't go as fast as the busa (Aerodynamics play a lot at high speed). Perhaps the ZX12 is a better bike and handles better but it didn't have that prestige of 200 MPH (the double Imperial ton). So now the ZX14 which is now arriving on the scene nearly 7 years after the Busa to do the same job or even faster. These are not sport bikes they are flagships of what companies can achieve to help boost sales though they are often called Hyper Tourers as they (well the Busa anyway) do a very nice and effortless job of touring at whatever speed you choose. All that HP is there just to give you a big top end and has disastrous effects on th rear tyres in the twisties though, I am sure as any Busa owner will vouch for, it is a hell of a lot of fun with good comfort.
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back to you, you've just high-sided!

the four main jap manufacturers signed a mutual agreement which said they would all artificially restrict their 'super bikes' to the speed of 300kph [indicated].

To remove the restrictor, it just merely changing a fuse, or the clocks, or the ECU or something or other. Isn't hard. But from the factory, they are restricted to 300kph.

Many car manufacturers thought it wasn't a bad idea, and restricted cages to 240kph (155mph) in pretty much the same way, all regardless of model or where they were released/bought in the world.

Car manufacturers have been doing it for far longer than the bike industry.

I had a 99 model busa reading just over 310 on the speedo (on a closed road of course). Dunno what the actual speed would have been though?

My 12 would do 330 on the speedo, In a relativly short distance, which works out to (using the rpm, gearing and tyre diameter) to 310 kph. I only ever raced one busa and ate it on top end.... I had a can, his was stock.
There's a lot of stories circulating around the 12, and performance restrictions just before it was released.....who'd put 35mm od headers on a 1200, what other bike will gain 15+ hp with just a pipe and a little fuel tweaking?

The Busa has been the speed king since it's arrival. The ZX14 has dethroned it and it's taken a long time to do that.

As mentioned above, a standard pre 2001 Busa, non limited, has been clocked under ideal conditions in the UK at 320kmh (198.4 mph)

After that year, all Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, agreed to limit all their fastest bikes to 300kmh (186mph) There is talk of that 'gentlemans'
agreement being dropped, but the problem is the huge amounts of horsepower compared to the speed gains required to get a bike safely over 320kmh. The costs begin to outway the benefit to most and therefore the economics of such a project begin to be seriously considered. i.e. research and development costs over how many sold when you start looking at NZ$ over $30,000 a unit.

The ZX12R, on paper, should have taken the top speed title from the Busa, but the fairings on the Busa have a smaller frontal surface area and in wind tunnel tests, the Busa gave way less drag, which gave it a better top speed.

The Ghostrider videos with the green turboed Busa, shows a GSXR1000 running at about 285-290kmh when the Busa passes on the rear wheel.
Again, there is a motorway clip where the GSXR1000 is sitting on 190kmh and the busa passes on the real wheel at quite a bit more KMH. Estimated top end at that clip for the Busa, would be around 340kmh. That's a Busa turning out 499bhp. A lot of power but very hard to get higher top ends.

A Turbo Busa in Canada was dynoed at 700bhp and some bugger in the USA is working on getting one to 1000bhp. Reliability? Dunno, but I wouldn't want to do the Coro loop on a 1000bhp Busa. The tyre might last for just the section between Kopu to Hikuia and you would want shares in BP.
If the destination is more important than the journey you aint a biker.

My RF's restrictor's a piece of piss to change - I give it to someone lighter for a ride

Actually it looks nothing like a RF900, its only one design aspect that you can consider to be similiar but thats about it
Look at the seat line and the fact its a one-piece seat with pillion strap, the pillion hand-grip on the rear, exhaust same height (evo tho the ZX has 2) and who can miss the 'George Foreman Grill' look huh? As soon as I had seen the new pics of the ZX that part really stood out......... but as you say thats the only similarities. Certainly doesnt look the same in the front - by far.

It will be good to see it in the flesh as pics really dont do bikes any justice.

Youre clutching at straws, you fainled to mention it has two wheels and a handle bar as well

The fins in the side are also represented on the mirros and the front forks, the reason is aero dynamics. As mentioned before it takes alot to get abike above the 200mph mark, little things like this help significantly especially with stability at high speed..............its there for a very good reason.
Ive run out of fucks to give

It's definitely an ugly piece of crap (mind you, so was the RF900 flying saucer), but I could care less... it's a tool, designed to go super fast... that's all the cred it needs in my book

The poor old RF stood pretty damn well against the Blades in the likes of Performance Bikes mag test... that too is all the cred they need imho.

The busa will be the fastest production bike in the world, until someon decides to brake the 'gentlemans' agreement, of 299km/h top speed.

And who ever does will most likley bring the wraith of the rest of the EU down on the whole industry.

Yes the new zx14r as more power than the busa, but in turn it is limited to the 'gentlemens' mark they are easyier enough to get around, but then its not production, since that is meant to be straight ouf of box no mods.

In turn the new busa when its out next year(possible following) will be limited to same speed.

Saying that the busa is a fun bike to ride just mass amounts of tourque, i was spinning the rear wheel at full throttle at 150/160 km/h and the recent drag day in both 2 and 3rd gear. Which is pretty insane if you think about it. And since the long wheel base and weighing in over 200kgs, they are not as twichy as the moden sports bike are, and are nice and smoth, thru the corners, with mass amounts of torque to pull you thru.

The thing with the busa as not changed since it was released 98/99 apart from few tweaks nothing major. just name 'hayabusa' is very well known to people who don't know motorbikes, they know that name like they know name 'harley-davidson'.

Personally would i buy a busa, no its not suit me and my riding style, but they are fun bike to ride, and when father in law has one, i can go 'borrow' when i want to have a play.
