Anyone know anything about the 1983 Suzuki GSX750ES?

This came up on TM, a 1983 Suzuki GSX750ES. Are they any good? Any concerns buying such an old bike?

All I know is that Kevin Schwantz raced one for Yoshimura back in the '80s...

my daily is of a similar vintage. going by the frame it's '85... rego'd as 89. guess it's just a mutt.

asides from new paws and a f*cked speedo drive and balancing the carbs, i haven't had to do anything to it. =no complaints. it's not exactly power-weight-gasm, but does what it need do.

concerns about buying "old" stuff... never. they're usually a damn site easier to work on. parts can be fixed rather than replaced (given a workshop) and they're just plain cool.

You shouldn't have any issues with it. Not spectacular performance wise by todays standards ... but at 60,000 km's still heaps of km's left in it. Look hard enough and similar size/age should be found. But at less than dealer price.

I think Robert Holden raced one (and won) at Wanganui one year after no other bike in the class (production I think) could be found. He was told it would be "non-competitive" but he would be still out on the track racing ... and could count it as practice for the other classes.

    Thumbs up

Wouldn't pay the dealers price, but otherwise a good bike, strong, reliable.

Only problem I've had with an engine of that ilk is a bent gear selector fork in the gearbox. Then again I did have to ride it through traffic without a clutch lever which is probably what caused it...

Otherwise they are pretty bullet proof.

If you do buy the bike I have the manual in pdf form if you want it.

I owned one (and its big brother the 1135) in '88/89/90. It was good in its day.. The 750 was a really nice ride.

Yup 1st brand new Bike I ever bought, Excellent manners, reliable

Kept up with all me mates 11 hundys only difference really was when 2 up. Dunno bout old school antidive or that wee front wheel it had...shims....Otherwise bullet proof was the bomb until the Katana superceeded it.

If you want it ... make them an offer. They would most likely give you a good deal on bike gear to seal the deal.

$2,500 from a dealer? That's a brilliant price, considering it will have to have a new wof issued and be covered by the cga etc.

Does the CGA always apply to used vehicles? I know that goods have to be fit for the purpose, but if it's such an old vehicle, is it "reasonable" to expect it to be repaired at the dealers expense?

Mate has one he's owned from new, only problem he's ever had was the usual suzuki stator frying itself. Otherwise it's always got him where he's going and home again, and super easy to work on.

Maybe it doesn't need "repaired" ... and if the dealer had any concerns about its ability to be fit for the purpose for which it was intended ... it would be sold "as is, where is".

My experience with those models make me believe it is well suited for the purpose.
